HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
This is a hard hunting report to write. Jim and Adrienne Fink, owners of Blackstone Outfitters were good people. We met them at the 2003 convention and liked their style. We bid and won a 10 day caribou hunt for September 16-29, 2003. we also added a moose to the hunt. There was a miscommunication regarding the cost of a non-hunting companion (my wife Kathy). The Finks graciously allowed her to accompany me for free! The Finks handled all charter air and ground transfers flawlessly. Their key people were friendly. We would have had a good hunt, except that there were no trophy animals in their area that we hunted. And believe me, we hunted: nine days of twelve hours each day riding horses, and one day traveling 40 miles by auto, scouting the river. We traveled and thoroughly scouted over 500 square miles without sighting one trophy moose or caribou. There was fresh snow, so tracking was easy; we only found tracks for 15 moose and 15 caribou in the entire 10 days. There were 10 hunters in camp, all on multi-species hunts. There were no sheep or bear harvested, I took one small, non-book caribou and there were two 55"-60" moose taken. When we had flown into camp and met the previous group of hunters, it appeared they had faired about the same. Of course, we heard the standard Canadian outfitters excuses I have heard for years: The rut was off-kilter; the weather was too warm, too cold, too wet or too dry, the moose were too high, or all on the river; the caribou were not herded-up or were too herded-up; and my favorite: We have had 100% success for years until this hunt... The bottom line is that the outfitter was ok, but his area does not seem to have huntable herds of trophy animals. The one caveat hunts offered by Blackstone in November should have decent success. For the Finks' sake, I wish I could file a more favorable report. Unfortunately, I feel hunting reports should state the facts.
---------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW DOCUMENT ---------------------------------------------------------------------
To: The Hunting Report From: Jim Fink Date: December 23, 2003 Re: September Alaska Hunt
I would like to thank you for sending me the hunt report from Leon Munyan. As you have indicated, it is good to get the views of both parties involved when there is a less than positive report. I recognize The Hunting Report as a valuable tool for hunter to research outfitters. Through your report we have had numerous positive reports from out past clients. I would like to comment on a few of the points that Leon has brought up that are considerably incorrect. Leon Munyan purchased this hunt at the SCI Convention in Reno in 2003. it was a donated caribou hunt with the option of adding moose and/or grizzly bear on a harvest fee basis payable to the outfitter. If he had been successful in killing a moose he would have owed an additional $6,500. We, the outfitter, only received $975 for this hunt, which was 30% of the auction purchase price. If anything, we needed Leon to harvest a moose, just so that we could break even on this hunt. As far as his wife coming along for no charge as a non-hunting companion, SCI misprinted in their auction guide that this was included. We did not realize this until the hunt was purchased and as he stated, we honored this and gave it to them for free, at a value of $2,000. I do not believe that the hunt cost was an issue in this negative report. As you can see by the structure of the price, it was more than fair from the outfitter. I do not feel that it is fair for Leon to assess the previous group of hunters, as he only met them as they were departing. Leon stated that "the previous group of hunters" appeared to fair about the same as he and the hunters on his hunt. In fact, there were five sheep hunters and one moose hunter on that previous hunt. They all were successful, some took more game than what they were originally booked for. If you would like, I can give you the names and numbers of any of these hunters. As far as the number of hunters in camp while Leon was there, we have never taken 10 hunters at a time! During his hunt there were six hunters, including Leon. There were two non-hunters (including Leon's wife) in camp. One of the hunters did not even meet Leon, as he arrived one day later and departed a day before the end of the hunt. None of these hunters were classed as being on a "full mixed bag hunt". Our booked, paying clients were there for moose with an option of caribou or grizzly bear. Some of the hunters were there for only one animal. In regards to game taken on this hunt, it was our poorest hunt in regards to success since we have been outfitting in the Yukon (four years). There were three moose taken, measuring from 55-62", and Leon's caribou (that he purchased). One hunter, (who was on his fourth hunt with us and is booked to come again in 2004), shot at and missed a large moose and saw several others in the area he had been hunting. The other hunter who was unsuccessful in getting a moose, as he was a client with a positive attitude, was offered an extension of his hunt. As far as the "Ratings" are concerned in his report, I don't feel there is any point going into a long, drawn-out explanation because you can see how negative he is. We are operating on a 60% return client base and if we provided what Leon considered poor in every aspect, would we be having this many return clients? Just to give you a brief outline: Leon and his wife stayed in a brand new cabin (built in 2003) at base camp, one of the saddles they were using was new, we also have a professional saddle-maker repair tack at the beginning of the season to make any necessary repairs. Transportation was a 2003 Chevy Duramax Diesel truck, and we had two new airplanes this season! I do recognize that Leon did not see many moose. As I explained earlier, it would have benefited us as much as him to take a moose. I tried to help, through aerial support, but had very few options. The aircraft were grounded, due to weather and large amounts of snow. Because of the bad weather, it limited my access into optional areas for him to be moved. I had seen more moose than the `15' that he stated, but hunting cannot be done from the air. The rut was off and the moose weren't calling. Through his 40 years of hunting experience on six continents, I would assume that he had run into circumstance beyond his control such as weather and game movements more than once. Through his comment about "Canadian outfitter excuses", it goes to show that he is more of a collector than a hunter, as he does not believe that there are things not in our control. This is why it is called hunting and not species gathering. This was one of the most difficult hunts that I have seen in 18 years in this business. I have talked to several outfitters, hunters and residents throughout the north, (Alaska, Northwest Territories, Yukon), and they all had tremendous trouble with weather and finding game during this portion of September, 2003. Due to the bad weather and strange game movement on this hunt, I decided to postpone to 2004, four of the six hunters who were booked to come on the next hunt. The two hunters who did come, were successful in taking two moose over 60". They were both very flexible hunters and gave us the opportunity to get into areas that Leon's circumstance would not allow. They also took two caribou. Leon had informed me that this was his third try at getting a caribou, as he is a species hunter and needed to "collect the animal". He was able to hunt in a caribou area for two days during this hunt and was successful in seeing caribou and taking a bull. If he would not have been as hung up on collecting the species, he may have had the opportunity to take a trophy animal rather than taking what he considered was "tiny". It comes down to the age-old question, why did you shoot it if you were not happy with it??? Leon did put in a good effort on this hunt, as did his wife, who went along everyday they hunted. Neither the weather, nor light conditions at this time of year allow for 12 hours a day of riding. I regret the fact that I did not realize that Leon did not get along with his guide and cook/wrangler until the hunt was nearly over. In many cases, I have found personality conflicts between guides and hunter creates a poor atmosphere for both parties with the hunters leaving with a bad taste in the mouth for the outfit. If I had known earlier, I may have been able to switch guide. If there are "virtually no trophy size animals" in our area, how have we taken numerous awards at the Yukon Outfitters' Association for some of the largest animals taken within the Yukon each year we have outfitted? When Leon states that there is no moose in our concession, he must not have realized that our area covers 10,000 square miles and I would surely hope that there is at least one moose left in this vast country called the Yukon! In conclusion, we are disappointed, but not surprised to see this report from Leon Munyan. In the past, if we have had hunters who were disappointed with any aspect of our outfit, they have had the decency of bringing it to our attention, personally. We have always been as accommodating as possible to see that our hunters have an option for future success. Jim and Adrienne Fink.
