HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
We booked this expedition in January 2010 at the SCI Convention in Reno. Carlos was bragging that he had many mule deer bucks on his ranch that scored over 200 B&C, and we should expect to shoot a mule deer that scored at last 190 B&C. He also told Eldred that the accommodations on his ranches were state of the art and that we did not have to bring towels, etc. We were also informed that there would be someone at the ranch who spoke English.
In reality, the situation on the ranch was very different from what we were told to expect. There was no bilingual employee on the ranch. In fact, Eldred and I spoke more Spanish than our hosts spoke English, and with no communication the bad situation became appalling. The blankets (sleeping bags) that we were furnished were inadequate for the conditions, and it wasnt until the third day at the ranch that we were given adequate blankets so that we could finally sleep without freezing.
The first evening, there wasnt any running water, and when it was running, hot water was intermittent and unpredictable. When we were finally able to take a shower, there were no towels available, and when we asked for a towel, the hosts seemed irritated that we wanted one. They gave us one towel for both of us, but we finally received a second towel on the fourth day. The generator was turned off every evening at 8 pm, and we were left without light until about 6 am. Eldred bumped his head on one of the door posts when he attempted to use the facilities. After complaining to our hosts about the incident, they gave us a flashlight on the last evening we were there.
The food was not at all what we expected every meal consisted of tacos filled with refried beans or mashed potatoes in small portions. We had explained to Carlos that Eldred has an allergy to pork, but we were served pork so often, we had to be vigilant. Fresh fruit and vegetables were practically nonexistent, and we were surprised at the overall lack of food. Some of the staff were belligerent, and I had a difficult time getting powdered cream to add to my coffee, even though supplies were abundant, and other hunters in the camp were not denied this amenity.
Now you may assume that even though the food and accommodations were atrocious, that the hunting was decent. Dont even think that way! We did not see any deer for the first three days and we were actively hunting (walking and riding). On the fourth day, we spotted two large does but no fawns nor bucks. We finally saw a buck on the sixth day, and it was far from a trophy. We asked the landowner how long it had been since there were trophy mule deer on the ranch. We were informed in broken English that it had been many years. Carlos implied when we discussed our frustration with his expensive safari at the Safari Club Convention in January 2011, that he would be sending Eldred a partial refund. The refund has not materialized.

Rebuttal From Mr. Carlos Gonzalez Hermosillo from Big Game Outfitters Mexico
Mr. Olsen and his non-hunting wife came to a camp with installations consistent with double rooms with ensuite bathroom, a rare plus in the Sonoran desert. The cook was traditional Sonoran and meals prepared by the owner in the same way and amount that she has done for all our hunters for the last 18 years. This past season the game was scarce due to the lack of rain and due to the rarity of the species. However, the other hunter in camp took a nice mid-sized buck and continued hunting for a second huge buck he saw after killing his first.
Mr. Olsen hunted 1x1, plus a driver, from a vehicle most of the time due to his shape and age, reducing his chances for a large buck. Finally, this area has produced over the years many record book mulies, including four SCI Top Tens.
We know that we cater to people with different personalities, and eventually you get one that cannot please no matter what you do.

Rebuttal from Carlos Hermosillo of Big Game Hunts
Very sorry to return to you until today but my season just ended and finally I got to my office a few days ago and I could catch up with my mail out.
Thanks for sending the hunter's hunt report - here are my comments to it.
First Page - It is ok what he says.
Second Page - Ratings - He rated a good operation with excellent equipment.
Second Page - Costs - It is ok what he says.
Second Page - Summary Remarks - We do have a lot of desert bighorn there. We are also opening the area for a new specie - the Baja California mule deer. This hunt was and is promoted as an exploratory hunt for a new deer specie. He saw 12 deer there. Not bad for a new specie. I remember having read in a mutual friend's report from your own hunt in Congo a few years ago that in 12 weeks you and your group did not see a head of game and this is Africa. Also an exploratory hunt.
Second Page - Important Notes _ Sadly he has never contacted us after his hunt. I do not know why he says he did. He did chat with the guide and got the same explanation above.
End of his and my comments.
