E-mail from Mike Daley to Barbara Crown, October 8, 2014:

Hi I read the email Extra report on Romania and was wondering if anyone has said anything about George Dina with Best European Hunts? I noticed there are some very good reports in the Articles and reports on him and his company! The reason I asked is I had booked a hunt with him and he had to cancel the hunt and now I cannot get hold of him? I'm not jumping to any conclusions here but would like to know if anyone else has said anything regarding him or his business? Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Mike Daley

E-mail from Mike Daley to Barbara Crown, October 8, 2014:

Hi Barbara: I will file a report but i was still trying to give him a chance to redeem himself. He told me in May that his wife left him and filed for Divorce and he was mentally drained. I was originally scheduled for may and he asked me to come in October. Then a couple weeks before the scheduled hunt, he told me to cancel my flight. He said he would return the funds. Big issue is I had paid for the entire hunt before my scheduled hunt in May, not just a deposit? I know his website is down and his besteuropeanhunt.eu email does not work. The last email he contacted me with is bestromanianhunts@yahoo.com I did receive an email the middle of September from him. I sent him a copy of your email extra report on Romania hoping that he might respond? On a positive for Romania a friend of mine just returned from their. He booked through Greater Spanish hunts and shot a huge Bear and a couple of Chamois. He said he saw over 100 bears in 4 days. So there is good news coming out of there. Mike

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
Dear Sirs,

I have been a subscriber of yours for many years and have hunted all continents, I value you publication very much and fortunately I have had no problems with an outfitter in my 25 long years hunting until now.

I made a kindergarten mistake by booking a hunt through the internet because I got lured by a Facebook page from a company named Best European Hunts or Best Romanian Hunts that in fact got some positive reports in your publication some months ago.

After I made my booking for a brown Bear and Boar hunt in Romania with this company and had made the 2,250 Euro deposit to their account, I found out through another Romanian person that they were a fraud, so I talked to them and they assured me the hunt would be a terrific experience and they offered me my deposit back if I could not make the hunt.

It happened that this materialized as my occupations did not let me get out of my place, so I ask them to be so kind to return my deposit, they asked me about my bank details and never sent me my deposit back. After some time a person a person named George Dina answered my email arguing that his partner Mircea Pauleanu who was the person to whom I have spoken at the beginning had a car accident and was in a coma, he sent me some pictures of wrecked car that later I found out it was an internet picture from an accident that occurred in Romania where the driver was killed at that site, so it could not be his partner.

To make the story shot, I would like to report to you that this two persons and the companies as well as some other companies that they have are a FRAUD!!!!! In this time I have been investigating and found that they are selling their domains of this web pages as they have many complaints from hunters all around the world, so I was not the only one.

Please get this to our fellow subscribers in order to prevent them to do business with George Dina or Mircea Pauleanu as they are people not to trust.
Best to you.

Hello,

Sorry for the late reply. From your email conversations with Mircea, I see that you have cancelled the hunting trip. Can I offer you another hunting trip in 2014, for the same price and the same conditions? Indeed, Mircea promised you verbally to return your deposit, from his own money, but this is not our company policy, the deposit purpose is exactly the same as for other hunting companies, to avoid dealing with time wasters. It is received as a guarantee that you won't cancel the hunt. Mircea tried desperately to sell your hunt, but without success.
Regards

George

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
Good gone bad -- A hunt from Hell. Last year I had a very good and successful hunt with George Dina and Best European Hunts. My only problem was that when my bear skin was shipped to me months after it was supposed to be shipped it was not my skin. My skin measured just under 8 ft. The skin I received was less than 5 ft. I paid to have it made into a rug. However, this was not done and I received only a small bear's skin. When I complained I was told (not by George Dina but by someone else) that the skin had shrunk because it was salted down and that it would stretch back out. I am aware that salted skins shrink but not to the degree that this one did. Also, my skin was supposed to be taken to a taxidermist immediately after I left the country. It took almost three weeks to get in touch with George Dina because he was out of the country on a hunting trip. When I finally talked to him, he did some investigating and told me that he did not know what had happened but he would give me another hunt free of charge this year. This was totally satisfactory to me because I had already planned to book a special stag hunt by horseback with George. He told me about this hunt last year when I was there, that he only did one each year and that it was limited to four hunters. I committed to the hunt at that time. When George told me that he would offer me another bear hunt, he said that we could just complete the stag hunt and then go after another bear. I made all of the required payments and arrived in Romania 10 days before the scheduled stag hunt. When I contacted George and told him I was there he immediately asked me if we could start the hunt a week early that he had received word from the ranger where we were going to hunt that the stag had started bellowing early and that we could come earlier if possible. What he did not tell me was that the hunt that I had originally booked had been cancelled because a party of three hunters had cancelled and he needed a part of four hunters to do the horseback hunt. He had changed areas and we would not be hunting from horseback. When we arrived at the area where we were going to hunt, there was a full scale logging operation going on that had started the week before we arrived. Also, it started to rain the day we got to the area. The landowner and the ranger were totally not prepared to conduct any type of hunt. They had done no scouting and were planning on the stag bellowing to locate them. Supposedly George and the ranger heard three stag bellow late the night we arrived. However, I did not hear a single bellow for two days. We went out early the next morning, it had started to rain so bad that the loggers had ceased operation. After going to two different areas we went in because of the rain. It was painfully obvious that due to the logging operation there were not going to be any animals in the area. We stayed for three days and I finally told George that we should leave. That hunting in this area was futile. He agreed and we left and drove four hours to another area. George told me that he had picked this area because the stag were very large and it would be good for him if I had taken a really big one. The second area was much better. The people were not prepared for us to come in at the last minute, however they had a much better operation and I did see two stag (one ran across the road in front of us). We stayed there for three days but without any luck in taking a stag. When we left the area I had to loan George some money to pay for the guest house where we stayed. He had lost his government ID card and could not pick up any money from Western Union. We got back to Bucharest on Sunday. George dropped me at my hotel with the understanding that he would pick me up the following Sunday and we would go bear hunting. The following day he did not show up and sent me no message. I tried repeatedly to phone him but got no answer. I got a four word text from him on Monday stating that his father had died. This would have explained some things. However, I have tried repeatedly to contact him for three weeks by phone, email and text. He has refused to answer any of my messages. I am totally appalled by his actions, or rather lack of any action. There were a number of other negative things that happened but I think I have told you enough. This was a good operation that went totally bad.

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt: The hunt, the accommodations, the people were all first rate. I had a problem getting my trophy but everything was resolved to my satisfaction. Had a problem getting my rifle through Amsterdam. I did not have a Transit Permit and the Dutch authorities held it until I picked it up on the way back.
Highlights of Hunt: Saw a huge bear but before I could get a reasonable shot it was spooked by a pack of wolves. It was taken two weeks later by another hunter and it scored No 5 in the CIC record book.
Equipment Recommendations: No special equipment needed. The weather in September is quite mild. These bears are nocturnal so if you have a night vision scope or equipment it would be a plus. If not, George will supply it. Get your CITES certificate in advance and either take your trophy with you or ship it home before you leave. Be prepared to take a 75 yd shot in very poor light. Given the size of "the one that got away" I would not consider a rifle smaller than a .300 Win/Wby Mag with minimum 180 gr bullets. 220 gr would be better (this is just my opinion).
Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? no
Why? Everything about the hunt proper was handled very good. I could not have asked for anything more.

Update October 28, 2013:

Ken Allen has requested we withdraw his recommendation on this report due to the manner in which this operator handled the shipment of his bear skin and a make-up hunt in 2013.  See report #9887.

1.The accommodations were outstanding.

2.Two of the blinds we hunted from were hunting houses built by the former Romanian dictator. This hunt would be great for a hunter who is physically handicapped. I am going back to hunt with George again this fall - hope to bring home a nice stag and another bear.

Rarely mentioned when one thinks of places to pursue big game, the country of Romania could be considered a diamond in the rough. The former tyrannical Communist dictator Ceausescu outlawed some game which only he and his friends were allowed to hunt and imposed restrictions on others. This allowed Romania to develop a healthy population of big game and produce a number of record book trophies; including European Brown Bear, Wild Boar, Red Stag and Chamois. Although I am not a wing shooter, I understand that there is also very good bird hunting available.

Possibly one of the most outstanding things about hunting in Romania is that it is extremely affordable when compared to other destinations. My 5 day bear hunt cost less than a 5 day Colorado elk or mule deer hunt.

The Romanian economy still suffers from its former Communist dictator and lags behind many of the other European countries. This makes it a very economical place to travel and the Romanian people are very gracious. There are a number of sites to visit including several amazingly well preserved castles and it would be a great place to takes ones family and let them visit some of the sites while you hunt. It is possible to arrange for a personal tour guide at a very affordable price when compared to other European destinations.

I wound up there last September almost by default. I had wanted to go to Kamchatka and hunt the huge brown bears there (Alaska is just prohibitively expensive). However, I could not find anyone who wanted to go and time was running out. While looking for a place to go grizzly or brown bear hunting I stumbled across Romania. Considering the cost of the hunt and the ease of getting there I decided to take a chance. I booked a hunt with George Dina of Best European Hunts (BestEuropeanHunts.com). George handled everything regarding the hunt (all hunting permits, gun permits, etc.) and built things to my schedule. The accommodations were outstanding. Even though we were in a very small village, I felt like the guest of honor at a luxury resort.

I saw a number of bears and wound up taking one that squared just under 8'. However, possibly the highlight of the trip was having a chance at a huge bear. Unfortunately it was spooked by a pack of wolves before I could get a shot that I was comfortable with. Two weeks later another took this bear and it scored number 5 in the record book.

All things about the hunt were good and I would not hesitate to recommend Best European Hunts. I am going back this September for a Stag hunt and a chance at another bear. There is one word of caution that I must give. Make arrangements to get you CITES certificate ahead of time and take your trophy with you or see that it is shipped back before you leave.

Given the facilities and the blinds, this would be an excellent hunt for a handicapped hunter.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
I had arranged to take the day after my arrival off to get over jet lag, but because rain was forecast for the next day, George, Andrei and I started into the mountains late in the morning. Good thing, because about a foot and a half of snow fell in the mountains the next day! Made the TV news because it was unusually early. Andrei found two chamois and I was able to take the bigger one. The return hike was down through field-grassed slopes which looked easy but were relentlessly steep - I really wished I had brought my hiking staff. Andrei is a full time ranger in the vast private property I hunted and he knew the territory very well. George made every effort to make this both a successful hunt and an enjoyable visit to his country. My stay was in a brand new lodge in a small village just off the hunting area. Andrei's mother was the cook and her food was excellent and plentiful. My room had a king size bed and the bath had a jacuzzi(!) While I was there, various parties of Romanian hunters came and went, either for Brown Bear from permanent stands or for driven hunts for boar and bear. George arranged for me to join a driven hunt (I didn't see anything) and also took me to one of the permanent stands at dusk where in 2 hours, we saw 10 bears come in to eat chocolate bars. There was even a brief tussle between 2 bears over who had first dibs. I had also arranged to have George act as tour guide after the hunt; we visited and stayed in some ancient towns that could have been anywhere in western Europe. Castles, fortified towns, even the house where Vlad the Impaler (look HIM up!) was supposed to have been born. We also drove through some towns that were way, WAY off the beaten track - it could have just as easily been 1911, except for a handful of cars and tractors. Great trip. George is a well-organized outfitter, a good tour guide, and great company. I hope to hunt with him again.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
When my friends told me about the exciting driven hunt for bears in Romania, I said I have to go and hunt a trophy bear. Unfortunately, when I decided to make this trip was already very late and the agency told me the trip was not possible because of the very cold weather. One of my employees, a guy from Romania, recommended to get in touch with Dina George, from Best European Hunts, which I did, in the same evening. George explained that the chances for a bear driven hunt are slim, because I am a single hunter and and indeed the time is quite late for hunting bears. Instead he proposed a baiting hunt, and he assured me that the chances for a successful kill are of 100%, as a bonus, he offered me the chance to hunt a wolf in the same hunt and for the same money. I must admit that the bonus was crucial in my decision. I decided to take the trip, and now, when I look back, it was one of the most amazing adventures of my life. The trip from the airport to the hunting lodge was short, and after a frugal but consistent lunch, we went to the bait station. There in a fair amount of time, up to 9 bears came to the bait and George explained that I must have patience, since the big bears like to come late to dinner, he will tell me when to shoot a really big one. I have to admit that after the ninth bear, I was starting to lose my patience but George looked calm. When the tenth bear came, George signaled that this is the one. Because of the long wait, the excitement and the darkness, the shot was a little low and the bear didn't die on the spot. The guide advised me to stay in the tree-house and don't get down until called by him. After 10 minutes, I heard George: It is dead, you can come down! My first Romanian brown bear!! It seemed huge to me, but the guide said it is around 390 points CIC, a big one, but not the monster I was expecting. Official measurement was of 380 points CIC. The second night we went to wolf bait hunting. George explained that the wolfs have vast territories that they check regularly. The trip to the baiting station was kind of interesting because we went through the rivers and streams, plenty of them in that mountain area. After midnight, the wolfs came, six of them. The feeling of staying so close to them was fantastic. I was hearing them howling, growling and crushing the bones of the bait. Unfortunately I lost my concentration for a moment, when I was trying to adjust my rifle for a better position to shoot. In a second, all the six wolves were gone. My shot came too late... There are many more things I would like to tell here, but I don't want that my excitement to be translated in long, boring texts. The Romanian adventure was truly amazing and I can't wait for this years hunting season to start in Romania and try the bear driven hunt. I am sorry for my broken english, but I come from Spain y me viene bastante dificil escribir en ingles :) Jorge Barrera Torres from Sevilla, Spain.
