The best connections to Romania are through Amsterdam. However, make sure you have your Transit Permit for your rifle. Very easy to get, but Dutch Authorities will not let your rifle pass through unless you have it. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
The hunt, the accommodations, the people were all first rate. I had a problem getting my trophy but everything was resolved to my satisfaction. Had a problem getting my rifle through Amsterdam. I did not have a Transit Permit and the Dutch authorities held it until I picked it up on the way back. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Saw a huge bear but before I could get a reasonable shot it was spooked by a pack of wolves. It was taken two weeks later by another hunter and it scored No 5 in the CIC record book. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
No special equipment needed. The weather in September is quite mild. These bears are nocturnal so if you have a night vision scope or equipment it would be a plus. If not, George will supply it. Get your CITES certificate in advance and either take your trophy with you or ship it home before you leave. Be prepared to take a 75 yd shot in very poor light. Given the size of "the one that got away" I would not consider a rifle smaller than a .300 Win/Wby Mag with minimum 180 gr bullets. 220 gr would be better (this is just my opinion). |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |

Everything about the hunt proper was handled very good. I could not have asked for anything more. |

1.The accommodations were outstanding.
2.Two of the blinds we hunted from were hunting houses built by the former Romanian dictator. This hunt would be great for a hunter who is physically handicapped. I am going back to hunt with George again this fall - hope to bring home a nice stag and another bear.

I had arranged to take the day after my arrival off to get over jet lag, but because rain was forecast for the next day, George, Andrei and I started into the mountains late in the morning. Good thing, because about a foot and a half of snow fell in the mountains the next day! Made the TV news because it was unusually early. Andrei found two chamois and I was able to take the bigger one. The return hike was down through field-grassed slopes which looked easy but were relentlessly steep - I really wished I had brought my hiking staff. Andrei is a full time ranger in the vast private property I hunted and he knew the territory very well. George made every effort to make this both a successful hunt and an enjoyable visit to his country. My stay was in a brand new lodge in a small village just off the hunting area. Andrei's mother was the cook and her food was excellent and plentiful. My room had a king size bed and the bath had a jacuzzi(!) While I was there, various parties of Romanian hunters came and went, either for Brown Bear from permanent stands or for driven hunts for boar and bear. George arranged for me to join a driven hunt (I didn't see anything) and also took me to one of the permanent stands at dusk where in 2 hours, we saw 10 bears come in to eat chocolate bars. There was even a brief tussle between 2 bears over who had first dibs. I had also arranged to have George act as tour guide after the hunt; we visited and stayed in some ancient towns that could have been anywhere in western Europe. Castles, fortified towns, even the house where Vlad the Impaler (look HIM up!) was supposed to have been born. We also drove through some towns that were way, WAY off the beaten track - it could have just as easily been 1911, except for a handful of cars and tractors. Great trip. George is a well-organized outfitter, a good tour guide, and great company. I hope to hunt with him again.

|
When my friends told me about the exciting driven hunt for bears in Romania, I said I have to go and hunt a trophy bear. Unfortunately, when I decided to make this trip was already very late and the agency told me the trip was not possible because of the very cold weather. One of my employees, a guy from Romania, recommended to get in touch with Dina George, from Best European Hunts, which I did, in the same evening. George explained that the chances for a bear driven hunt are slim, because I am a single hunter and and indeed the time is quite late for hunting bears. Instead he proposed a baiting hunt, and he assured me that the chances for a successful kill are of 100%, as a bonus, he offered me the chance to hunt a wolf in the same hunt and for the same money. I must admit that the bonus was crucial in my decision. I decided to take the trip, and now, when I look back, it was one of the most amazing adventures of my life. The trip from the airport to the hunting lodge was short, and after a frugal but consistent lunch, we went to the bait station. There in a fair amount of time, up to 9 bears came to the bait and George explained that I must have patience, since the big bears like to come late to dinner, he will tell me when to shoot a really big one. I have to admit that after the ninth bear, I was starting to lose my patience but George looked calm. When the tenth bear came, George signaled that this is the one. Because of the long wait, the excitement and the darkness, the shot was a little low and the bear didn't die on the spot. The guide advised me to stay in the tree-house and don't get down until called by him. After 10 minutes, I heard George: It is dead, you can come down! My first Romanian brown bear!! It seemed huge to me, but the guide said it is around 390 points CIC, a big one, but not the monster I was expecting. Official measurement was of 380 points CIC. The second night we went to wolf bait hunting. George explained that the wolfs have vast territories that they check regularly. The trip to the baiting station was kind of interesting because we went through the rivers and streams, plenty of them in that mountain area. After midnight, the wolfs came, six of them. The feeling of staying so close to them was fantastic. I was hearing them howling, growling and crushing the bones of the bait. Unfortunately I lost my concentration for a moment, when I was trying to adjust my rifle for a better position to shoot. In a second, all the six wolves were gone. My shot came too late... There are many more things I would like to tell here, but I don't want that my excitement to be translated in long, boring texts. The Romanian adventure was truly amazing and I can't wait for this years hunting season to start in Romania and try the bear driven hunt. I am sorry for my broken english, but I come from Spain y me viene bastante dificil escribir en ingles :) Jorge Barrera Torres from Sevilla, Spain.
