Outfitter very accomodating. I chose stand / area I wanted. Had large boar (400+) @ 10yds. first day but couldn't get shot opportunity. Saw same animal 5 separate times and finally had perfect opportunity but missed. In researching outfitters for my trip, I asked to be treated fairly, honestly, and to have the opportunity to match wits with a large bear with my bow. That is exactly what I got and this trip was outstanding in spite of not harvesting a bear. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
The timing may not have been perfect due to the beginning of mating season and the bears may have been wandering some in search of mates. That said, I positioned myself with that in mind and set up on a power line in hopes that would be a travel corridor. I hit it right and came on a large boar right away. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Playing cat & mouse with a large, wise bear for 6 days. I ultimately fooled him and ended up with the perfect opportunity only to miss the shot. |

Recommendations: |
|
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
Yes |
| Why? |
Recommendation: Mainly because the Outfitter delivered exactly what was promised. I got exactly what I asked for. I'm pretty self sufficient and can get along with not much but I witnessed the Outfitter and guides cater to others to meet their wants and needs. Personally, I think they went above and beyond for some. ` |

|
This was my first experience with an outfitter. I'm an experienced hunter and outdoorsman and have researched trips for a long time. Choosing one is not easy but I either did a good job or I was lucky because this trip was everything wanted and asked for. Everything went smoothly for me and arriving at the camp lodge I knew this was the place I'd hoped for. The staff was friendly & accommodating and the lodge was new and like a picture out of a magazine as it sat alone in the wilderness. Visiting baiting sites amped up the anticipation and having come face to face with that big bear on the first night set off the week. The conclusion was anticlimatic and actually pretty funny as I missed the bear - with a rifle! I'd hunted with a bow all week but after playing tag, hide & seek, and every other game with that beast, I was gonna win on the last day. Actually, in hindsight, everybody won. I'd recommend this trip to anyone, and if you aren't convinced after talking to Dean, give me a call and I'll tell you the whole story.

|
I had extremely high expectations. Outfitter is famous and holds six B&C awards himself. Outfitter advised to bring muzzleloader for potential #1 record. Outfitter delegated hunter to inexperienced guide. Hunter hiked over 50 miles of wet tundra in search of any trophy animal seeing only 11 total bulls in seven days in the field. Hunter is disappointed with lack of commitment and total disregard for previous promises. Camp is excellent though.
---------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW DOCUMENT ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Date: January 13, 2005 To: The Hunting Report From: Gerard Beaulieu of Beaulieu's Caribou Hunts RE: Critical report from Randy Pretzer
Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Randy Pretzer's hunting report.
The hunter's satisfaction is really a result of his or her expectations.
I suggested to Randy to bring a muzzleloader, as there were many records that could be broken. We had five hunters using muzzleloaders and four harvested animals. Three made the Black Powder World Record Book scoring 287 BP, 251 BP and 241 2/8 BP. And at this moment they are proud of these results because in the last ten years over 20,000 caribou have been harvested and many with muzzleloaders. Randy Pretzer's is the new #7 in the world BP.
I generally never promise to guide an individual hunter myself. Almost every client wants me to guide them. I usually reply with I'll guide you if I can. With four hunters in camp at a time I can't guide everyone; it's impossible. I usually guide a couple of hunters each season.
Randy Pretzer's guide was Tom Rose. Tom is an experienced licensed guide. He can field judge woodland caribou and is an official measurer for the Newfoundland Big Game Record Book. Tom and I harvested our first B&C woodland caribou (score 301) together in 1991 fourteen years ago. Tom has since harvested two B&C caribou. Tom guided one of his clients earlier in the season to a big caribou taken with a muzzleloader and the previous week to Randy's hunt his client was guided (Rick Dignan) to a 270 5/8 B&C caribou. He then guided Randy Pretzer to his record book caribou.
Woodland caribou are not as plentiful as barren ground caribou. There is no migration. We hunt the best areas as our records show. The area is wet tundra and is hard to walk on. Randy worked very hard to get his record book animal. In spite of his report I'm proud of him and his accomplishment. You don't buy trophies you earn them. This is fair chase hunting.
Two other hunters that were in camp the same week as Randy are Dr. Jay Wolefenden 608-489-3499. Another hunter was Jim Benham (retired police officer) 208-846-7373 (both took record book animals).
We do the best we can to harvest big caribou. We have the highest paid guides in Newfoundland and as a group I am very proud of them. They harvested thirteen caribou (we saw over 1,000) and achieved thirteen record book entries.
