The fall hunt is much different than the spring. You will be hunting these bears up close and personal. My shot was at 25 yards. Once again I really enjoyed the company of Jim, Bert and Bob. Good people all the way around. And like I said in my spring report.. THESE GUYS KNOW HOW TO HUNT. I would not hesitate to ever use or recommend these guys. I did my research, I was at SCI, I phoned references. I am more than happy to give these guys a HUGE thumbs up. Go ahead, book with them, you will not be disappointed. The only regret I have, is that I can not hunt brown bear with them again for another 4 years. On a side note, when we delivered Dad's bb to our Taxi guy, he commented that this was the best prepared hide he had ever seen. In fact he made a special effort to call me and make sure I passed on his thanks and admiration to Bob who took care of Dads hide. IMPRESSIVE to say the least. Food is excellent and lots of it Beds are comfortable and warm. Lodge is GREAT. Boats are clean, powerful and safe. Guides are outstanding. Equipment is all top notch. The experience is priceless. Ok, let me say this first. I have been on other guided hunts for elk, black bear and caribou. I cannot ever imagine being treated better than how Jim and Burt treated us. These guys know exactly what they are doing. They hunt hard, they hunt fun. Plenty of laughs and lots of hard work. I don't know who was more disappointed when I didn't manage a bear. But I know this much. I could never see myself hunting SE Alaska with anyone but these guys. I was fortunate enough to be on plenty of stalks, but for one reason or another it just didn't work out. I can't figure out if I am the luckiest or most unlucky hunter in the world. Though I didn't get a bear, I cannot imagine how it could possibly have been any better. If you have a chance to go with these guys, you must do it. I guess I am at a loss for words to describe how truly professional this company is. By far and away my most enjoyable hunt ever. On this hunt, I also took my dad. He is getting close to that 60 mark now and this hunt was manageable for him. Dad swears up and down these guys walk on water. Problems of Hunt: Outfitter forgot I was coming. Stuck in a hotel in town for three days. No game of any kind sighted, except a glimpse of one wolf and a quick shot at one, which I missed. Highlights of Hunt: Equipment Recommendations: Good warm rain gear. Good optics, motion sickness pills or patch. Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? No Why? What can I say: 7 hard days of glassing. Covered about 1,000 miles of coastline. Did numerous scouting trips and calling set-ups. Did not see a single bear of any kind. Saw one wolf and a glimpse of another. Did not see a single bear track. Only saw wolf tracks - over a week old. I willingly paid about double the cost of a normal bear or wolf hunt, thinking that they must have significant numbers of trophy animals. I could not recommend anyone else make the same mistake.

Rebuttal from Bert Stromquist of Baranof Expeditions: I'm writing this in response to Leon Munyan's comments. I did not accompany Leon and Jim on the hunt, as I had to bring our second boat up from Seattle for the following hunt. Jim and I went over the hunt in detail when it was over (which we do after every hunt to compare notes, game movement, grass condition, etc.). I did, however, meet Leon here in Sitka prior to the hunt. I'll just hit each comment he made briefly. Game condition: Although they didn't see any black bear (probably due to one of the latest springs on record...check with the early season Kodiak hunters) they saw multiple wolf tracks, heard wolves calling and Jim called in a wolf to 137yds, stopped him with another call and the hunter got a shot. As to his ratings of "fair" across the board. I would argue that our outfitting, condition of camp and gear, quality of food, and especially ability of guide far surpass a "Fair" rating. Jim is an Alaskan Master Guide and his reference list of happy hunters,both succesful and non-succesful, is extensive. "Outfitter forgot I was coming"------I can personally attest to this situation. In our literature and in our verbal communications we suggest the hunter arrive in Sitka on the day prior to the hunt. Mr. Munyan arrived three days early. Jim went out of his way to finish up his business as best he could and he started Mr. Munyan's hunt 1 day earlier than scheduled. I don't believe he even got a Thank-you for that. Leon was right about 7 hard days of glassing. Jim told me they hunted hard the entire time. They covered our entire black bear Guide Use Area. However, 1000 miles is a little far-fetched. That would mean 7 days of cruising 12 hours a day at 12 Kts. We barely have 12 hrs of daylight at that time of year and it's to glass hard (if at all) at 12 Kts. They did go to the beach often in search of wolf tracks as this was Leon's primary target species. they also tried several calling setups. This translates to me as a guide busting his butt for his client. Probably due to an extremely harsh winter for Southeast Alaska no black bears were encountered. Wolves is another story. Tracks were seen on a couple of beaches and Jim heard howling at one place. The next day he called in a nice wolf for a 137 yd standing shot. Leon shot underneath the animal and it ran off. According to Jim, the first words out of his mouth were.." I screwed up! You did your job." Leon then went on to explain that he held under the wolf, as he figured his bullet would rise a little over 5" at 130 yds.?????? Jim said nothing. Jim has not been informed by the hunter that he was unhappy (in fact Leon gave him a $400 tip).Nor did I hear from Leon. Jim first found out when someone from the Hunt Report contacted him. I highly recommend this hunt to someone desiring to hunt brown bear in Southeastern Alaska, as opposed to the penninsula. I like the weather better and my goal was a "vacation" hunt as I've long since proven my abilities in the field, over mountains, on horseback, etc., and just wanted to enjoy brown bear hunting without 10 mile hikes each day in fowl weather, or being stuck in a tent for days on end with nothing to do. The equipment and boats were excellent and James Boyce is a very experienced Alaskan outdoorsman of the highest order. It is a joy to hunt with someone of his caliber and I've hunted all over the USA, Alaska, Canada and Africa. I killed a great bear on the 5th hunt day and then left early, which was an added bonus for my schedule. This would also be a great hunt for the first time brown bear hunter.

Game Sought But Not Taken: Deer, Sitka Blacktail - Availability: I missed the shot! Game Condition Comments: Considering this goat was a mature 6 1/2-year old, I feel that I got the total trophy package.

The hunt was conducted from a 34-foot boat, used to travel up the fjords of Baranof Island to the areas where we expected to find goats. You see a lot of scenery and wildlife from the water. Assistant guide and boat captain, Eric Johnson, was also very client-conscious and fun to hunt with. We would anchor in the bays and go ashore via a skiff, then hike into the mountains to spot and stalk. I saw up to 19 goats in one day, four of which were acceptable shooters. The billies had big bases with thick, weighty horns, and coats with hair and beards so long that they extended to the animals
