ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
E-mail to Tomo Svetic from Marinos Petratos, October 18, 2015:

I am not surprised I have not heard from you to date concerning my recent hunt in Croatia. How could anyone justify the serious errors that occurred on this trip? I too did not write sooner, because I wanted to wait and send a letter stating the facts, and not one based on emotion.

Up until 36 hours befor my arrival, I received text from you stating "see you at airport." I arrived in Slovenia, and was met by your assistant Dean, a very nice and personable guy who speaks excellent English, but as the hunt progressed, it was revealed that he does not have your experience.

The hunt in Slovenia involved a difficult climb to an elevation of about 1500 meters on a footpath. We were lucky, and the local guides spotted an animal at about 150 meters, which resulted in a 1-shot kill.

The story in Croatia was much different. The animals were very few, I did not have a single shot! The animals were very spooky, spotting us a kilometer away and taking off. Your local guides were not aware of locations of animals but rather were just taking long difficult walks and climbs to sight-see! There were days we did not see 1 animal.

But what is much more serious is the danger to limb and life that I was subjected to by one of the local guides named Vlad. I told him I could not climb, I was 79 years old, and he insisted we take a walk of over 3km. At some point we arrived at an area of huge boulders and rocks that were very slippery and sharp. I fell a few times and cut my hands and legs. He expected me to go down a goat path full of dangerous obstacles that was 600m above the road where Dean was waiting. If Dean was more experienced he should never have allowed this dangerous excursion. I called Dean with your guide Mario's phone, who is very good and I am not sure he knew of the danger here. I told Dean I did not come to Croatia to be killed in a dangerous fall. He wisely called the mountain rescue team. We waited hours, it was getting dark and cold. The team arrived and with their special gear were able to get me down the mountain in almost 2 hours.

A SERIOUSLY LIFE THREATENING SITUATION, THAT I AM SURE WOULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF YOU WERE IN CHARGE LIKE YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN.

Despite this danger and experience, we continued to hunt for two days, and had only one shooting opportunity that was a fleeting over 250 meters unreasonable shoot. In short your statement of having 100% success in these hunts is no longer valid.

Dear Marinos,

I am so sorry to hear that your trip wasn't good.

To be honest this is the second time in 10 years that I got a negative report. The first one was two years ago when the agent who sold the hunt promised to his client something we don?'t do. Anyway, at the end I resolved everything.

I wish I was able to write to you earlier but unfortunately my unplanned trip to Kyrgyzstan was delayed for 2 days due the airliner not taking our guns so we stayed in Turkey. After the hunt on Ibex was successfully finished guys wanted to stay extra 4 days and try to get wolves.

That wasn't successful but the trip was hard core hunting and great adventure. I got back to England on 18 Oct just few min after you sent the mail.

It wasn't something I expected but I asked all the guys involved to send me their views on your trip. Dean was in Hungary with a client and he did his report last night.

Alpine chamois is normally above 1300 m (below that we call it hilly chamois and we don't consider it Alpine) and my guys had to take you to the area at 1400m. You got your chamois there at 129m shooting distance which is pretty good because normally we shoot on average beyond 200m as you would expect in the Alps (my last shots were at 318 and 440m successful).

Your test shot was beyond 200m and you shot the target with the second shot which is great. In Slovenia we don't have wolf and Lynx, brown bear is in small number and not in the area so the animals are calmer and very territorial which helps us to execute most of our hunts on first day.

Croatia is a different story and Balkan chamois is in smaller number, normally in heard 4-8 animals, they are shy and more prone to run away if they spot you from a distance. We have lots of wolves there, lynx in good number and plenty of bears. They al chase chamois and everything else in the area so very often our observations can be changed overnight. However there is a good number of them but it is not easy to spot them every time before they spot you and move on. They blend really well in that rocky terrain and they use rocks so well to hide. You are not the oldest hunter we've had so far but you are the first one who didn't get his trophy and who was rescued by mountain rescue team. We know the rescue guys very well and we support them.

I understood from guys that you had 3 chances in 4 days of hunting and that you missed them all. On two occasions you had a good rest at 300m and 250m.

Mario told me that you managed to hit the target beyond 200m with the first shot and with only few seconds used for aiming s?o he expected that up to 350m you should hit chamois easily.

To be honest we shot 80% of chamois there on day 1 and for those who want better size trophy we take to the area where are no paths and it is not an easy stalk.

I wish I was there to see what happened myself and maybe if I was there the hunt would be a different story. I don't know but those guys guided more than 40 clients there on mouflon and chamois ? in last 19 months with 100% success. Mario and Vlado were surprised that on that climb they didn't get the chance on chamois earlier because Davor and Mate saw 4 chamois very close to your starting point and 3 chamois at half way through during their observations two days prior to your hunt. Also they regret not stopping the hunt when they realised that you might have serious problems. They are driven by success and normally I am the one who always find the compromise and sometimes slower their pace. Vlado actually hoped that your hunt and climb will be short after the info from scouts two days earlier so he was pushing hoping that you'll get the chamois quickly.

The thing is that guides or myself go to the positions where we thing the chances are better.

I apologise about all the troubles you had and that you didn't get the Balkan chamois.? I apologise for not being there with you as I wanted and promised.

If you ever decide to hunt species we have in England your experience will be different, the hunt easier, guides and the grounds one of the best we have in the UK.

Please tell me to which address to send you the trophy.

Sincerely,
Tomo

Thank you for your predicted response. I too am sorry, but the shots I had were all very poor examples of what a reasonable shoot should be. I should not even have attempted them.

My impression is that your guides were just humoring me with those long unproductive walks. There were no animals to be seen .

There is no point to being upset, because that only creates negative energy. We should probably have had a discussion about what was involved in this hunt.

Good morning Marino,

I wish you didn't shoot if you weren't comfortable because it is not a problem if you refuse it.

It is what it is and the outcome wasn't great.

Guides weren't humoring ?with you. Trust me they want to get the trophy more than anyone.

I am really disappointed that this hunt wasn't successful and not pleasant for you.

Hopefully one day we might sit and discuss this hunt over dinner or during some hunt. There is too many things involved in every free range hunt and there is so many things to talk about.

As soon as the trophy is ready we will send it to the given address.

Best wishes,
Tomo

E-mail from Tomo Svetic to The Hunting Report, August 15, 2016:

Thank you for contacting me regarding this. Unfortunately the first part of his hunt worked well as we planned the second wasnt due his ability to walk and shoot.

To be honest I am not surprised on Marinos negative report and I feel sorry for him but also for my team which did a lot to please him. However, in open grounds sometimes we cant control, especially distances at which our trophies should appear. Mr Marinos was warned in advance that Alpine chamois will be done in short period of time and it is not an accident that his trophy was shot on first day after short walk. It is a planned hunt in the area where are no predators and where the game is abundant. Our record is 4 hunters 4 chamois in one day there.

About the Balkan chamois I warned Mr Marinos that the hunt is not easy and that is unpredictable even though the success has been there 100% for us. You were hunting mouflon ram with me so you experienced the terrain. Also I sent a few videos from our hunts there so he could see what to expect.

I understood that this wouldnt be a problem for him if we take easy pace.

Mr Marinos had 3 chances to get chamois in 4 days, once at 250m and once at 300m, one chance was at 330m. Before the hunt Mr Marinos tried our rifle at 209m successfully and all the distances were measured with RF. To be honest this hunt would be executed on the first day if the client was younger or in better shape to walk. With Mr Marinos it was impossible to stalk quietly and get closer to the animals. The ground was observed for days prior to his hunt and we took him there to get the trophy on first day because the situation was great. However, due clients inability to stalk in the way that terrain requires animals were spooked before our team got into position to shoot. For the first two shots the rest has very good to shoot and the client had enough time to prepare for the shot or to decline.

The walk or climb was difficult but some of our older clients but in better physical shape managed to hunt there at slow pace but successfully. Mr Marinos had all the rights to refuse further climbing or shooting at distances he wasnt comfortable with however he didnt. My team is driven by success and there is no difference if I am there or not. Probably if I was there the hunt wouldnt be more successful but I would definitely end up the hunt for Mr Marinos after day two after realizing that he is not able to hunt Balkan chamois there where they live. If there was no chance to see or shoot Id blame myself and my team despite working and hunting in harsh environment but the chances were there and animals too. Not abundant because in that terrain is difficult to see chamois easily and because we have large predators there. On many occasions we would see 2-5 chamois and realizing that there are 20+ around after the shot has been fired. You were there and know the terrain we have.

It is true that my guide Mario called the Mountain rescue team and that was the first time we needed.

The client was in slight panic to go downhill and he claimed that he didnt have enough strength to go down the mountain. Again, the judgment of this climb is very subjective so I wouldnt want to say more about this because what is easy for one it might be difficult for another.

I called Mr Marinos when he met my main guide Dean and spoke to him to apologize about my absence.

Unfortunately it was the last minute decision due administrative problems caused by immigration officials so instead of my guide going to Kyrgyzstan with our clients I had to go myself.

It was a hiccup for us and we cant take full responsibility for third parties (airliners, taxidermists, shipping agents) even though we try to use the best. Also we cant take the full responsibility for hunting in wild open areas (bad weather, predator disturbance and clients health issues) even though we try our best to control what we can and manage our grounds at the highest standards.

The Alpine chamois Mr Marinos shot on his first day of hunting at 129m was sent to him free of charge.

All the best,
Tomo

E-mail from Marinos Petratos to The Hunting Report, August 15, 2016:

Dear Barbara,

Thank you for sending me a copy of Tomo's response. I don't want to get into a combative letter writing situation of accusations back and forth, but I must just comment on a few points. My hunt in Slovenia was not just a short walk. It required climbing and walking of over 1500 meters.( this was shown in my photo), and back down. He makes it sound as if the animal was around the corner.

I believe it was very Rude of him to make the statement, "hunt would be executed on the first day if the client was younger or in better shape" . Most hunting can only be afforded by older hunters. In addition he states that I could decline the shot! Yes, I could, but I did not see much evidence that we would see many animals, therefore we take a chance in an uncomfortable situation.

He continues to bring up my age and physical condition, instead of focusing on the errors of judgment of his guides. He also is very defensive in many of his statements, and to say I was overcome by "Panic",

could not be further from the truth. I was placed in a life threatening situation by his guides, and expected to jump from boulder to boulder as shown in my Photos. I tried but was cut be the sharp Rocks on my Hands and legs. His guides were of little help, and I am the one that suggested we get Help. Thank God for the Croatian National Mountain rescue Squad which took over 2 hours for them to get me down. One of the points I wanted to make was that after paying for Medical Evacuation insurance for years, I was canceled because of my age. This is a serious lesion to be learned by all!!!

His last 2 paragraphes are an attempt for him to steer free of any guilt. I must state that I fully paid for the daily rates, and the trophy fee for the Alpine chamois. He just paid a few Euro's for the shipping of the Horn's.

It was not my intension to ever make any type of a problem, because as a man who has hunted extensively I realize that Hunting is Hunting, and not shooting. I wanted fellow hunters to know that despite using a respected Outfitter and Guide, things can go wrong, and we should always be prepared. He was more upset that he is no longer 100% than by anything else.

I expected him , as a well known guide, to accept that things can go wrong, and did in my case, and not try to make to make irrelevant excuses. I expect nothing else.

Sincerely Yours,
Marinos Petratos, MD

The vast majority of Croatians speak passable English. They drive on the right as in the US. Very mountainous but mountains along the sea where we hunt were only several thousand feet high, so altitude shortness of breath was not a factor. Almost anyone in even below average shape can do this hunt. We used their gun with Swarowski scope. Don't bother bringing your own gun. You will have the opportunity to sight it in at a quarry. It was a spot and stalk hunt where you check out canyons and then drive a few miles and check out another canyon and then the next canyon. Learned of this hunt via The Hunting Report. Tomo and his team did a great job. One team member (Christian) escorted my wife to local sights while I was hunting. Bring your spouse and you will both be happy.

The hunt was smooth, organization excellent, guides professional and very patient. Some guides didn't speak good English but it didn't matter at the end. The area where Artemis Hunting Ltd. operates is very good for family holidays and there is good ski resort, hiking trails, sports on the river, museum and nice restaurants. From the peaks of 1600 to 2500 meters high we could see Italy and Austria. To be honest I didn't expect that each of us will get his trophy next day. Guides and the outfitter prepared themselves in advance. I have never seen such efficiency.

Game Condition Comments: It was a great hunt with plenty of chances to see mouflon sheep. I must say that it wasn't easy to shoot at distances beyond 230 yards. There is lots of young rams and rams 3-6 years old and I saw 2 very big rams with horns 36-39 inch. Animals are in good number, in good health and very sensitive on humans. The hunt is not easy and it is more difficult than in Slovakia or Hungary where we shot rams in fenced grounds from blinds. This is different game and one of the best so far. They have plenty of Euroasian wild boar too with some enormous tuskers up to 500 lbs.

The food and drinks were amazing, hospitality great and knowledge of the guides excellent. I missed 3 rams because the rifle had a light triger and it wasn't mine.It was my fault and I wasn't familiar with LR shooting. Next time I'll take my spotting scope to enjoy hunting more.

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt: I was jinxed (i.e. flat snake bit).
Highlights of Hunt: This was my second trip to Croatia for brown bear (March 2009 previous) with Tomo. He was a super outfitter (you must use local concession game keepers).
Equipment Recommendations:
Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes
Why? 100 percent 24 hour a day accommodation. It was a "great" hunt. I just would be in place A and the game would be in place B. That is hunting. If I was 10 years younger I'd probably did better. But it was still a great hunt. Tomo felt so bad he said he'd give me a free wild boar hunt.

The MD of agency was with me all the time and his service was very good. His English was good too but he is origin Croatian. He was very helpful, honest and great company during my stay there. The food was similar to Italian but the taste was better. Animals are impressive and whole experience different than in other European countries. I realized that the fenced animals are not fun anymore and the the real habitat of mouflon is dry and rugged terrain, not green and flat fields.
