I saw at least 200 Deer in the 4 days I hunted. The buck to doe ratio was about 15 to 1. Saw at least 6 quality bucks. My hunting partner saw at least that many. The body size of the bucks was larger than I expected. |

I'm angry and disappointed about my Coues deer hunt with you in Mexico. As you may recall I first booked this hunt with you at the SCI convention. At that time I indicated to you that I failed to take a trophy coues deer with another outfitter because of lack of communication between me and the Spanish speaking guide. You assured me that you would personally guide me on my hunt with your company. Due to other factors the hunt was postponed and did not take place until December 2000.
My first disappointment was that you did not guide me personally as you promised. The guide assigned to me, although English speaking was not a competent judge of trophy deer quality. He instructed me to shoot a deer, which turned out to be inferior in size, not even close to a record book deer, which you know I aspired to. The guide was sorry that he made an error in judgment, which cost me a trophy deer and he felt that you would be able to make things right by offering me the opportunity for another deer (trophy quality) in the time remaining. Rather then attempting to help my situation you chose to go on your own personal hunt the following morning and in the mean time.
I was extremely disappointed that you ignored my plight. It seems ironic that I found myself in the same situation, which brought me to hunt with you at the first place, i.e., a guide told me to shoot a deer, which was not a trophy deer.
I was especially chagrined since I paid $4,000 and other outfitters were charging $2,500. I was willing to pay the extra $1,500 because of your excellent reputation and your assurance that I will be guided by a knowledgeable English-speaking guide, such as yourself. You clearly had the time to attempt to fix my situation but chose not to do so and further more you made no proposal for monetary restitution on a repeat hunt.
We have known each other for many years and have been associated with our SCI and the Mule Deer Foundation chapters. I have always admired your reputation and I thought that there was a mutual respect between us. As you know the shooting sport is my occupation, recreation and my passion.. I have served countless hours as president of our chapter SCI, Mzuri Safari Club, Ducks Unlimited and presently president of the Mzuri Wildlife Foundation. I have attempted to maintain high level of integrity in the shooting sport that I love. I hope you feet the same. I will await your proposal to address this grievance.

I'm very angry and disappointed in you. You should have said something before. I'm sure you read in the Hunting Report that I was giving some hunters free hunts this year. They deserve these hunts - you don't. They never even had a chance at a buck. You passed up two bucks over 100 points and chased one that would have booked.
When you booked your hunt with me, I would have guided you if you had come the year you were booked. In fact, we didn't have to honor your deposit. It had already been sent to the Mexican Outfitter. Once they get it there is no chance of having it returned. We found someone to take your place at cost, so our profit was lost.
I've talked to several people (guides and hunters) and they told me that you're never happy with a hunt unless you kill the biggest animal. When you buy a hunt you don't buy the animal, you buy the chance to take an animal.
Mr. Tabib, you had chances at very good bucks that you passed up. That's fine if you are after a "huge" buck. However, you may go home without anything. That's what makes a true trophy hunter.
Dale made a mistake when he told you that the buck had a big frame. He did not tell you to shoot. You had already passed up two big frame bucks.
I pay the Mexican Outfitter $2,000 for the first buck and $1,500 for the second. Would you have paid another $1,500 for a half-day chance at another buck? Also, there are only so many tags for each ranch, and they were sold. Another thing, my personal hunt was on another ranch that I couldn't take clients on. I had a chance to kill the buck I was after the day before but I didn't because you had not gotten a buck yet!
Other outfitters are not charging $2,500, so don't give me that. If you didn't kill a buck would you be complaining? I think you would. You think that if you pay for a hunt, you are entitled to a B&C buck or your money back!
I'm not sure why you went into all the "shooting sport" crap in your letter unless you were trying to intimidate me, which wouldn't work because the people that count know me and you. Also, you made this a big deal like calling me Mr. Schaafsma instead of Jim like a friend would do.
Now I don't think I owe you anything but here's what I'll do: One deer hunt costs me $2,000, my guide costs me $500 (I won't be guiding you). You can come for $2,500. I'll cover my expenses (gas, trucks, etc). You will need to get your papers in early. Last year, you were late on everything. Even if you use our guns, you still have to get the police report this year, so you might as well bring your own gun.
B&C bucks are still hard to come by so, you are probably going to be disappointed again. How many B&C animals do you have? You passed up SCI bucks, good trophy quality animals. Bucks that very few Coues deer hunters would pass up.
You need to let me know immediately if you are, and even if you are not, interested.

I did not appreciate the tone of your letter. The shooting sport "crap" to which you refer happens to be my life. I have served hundreds of hours to make this sport respected, safe, acknowledged and funded.
I have served as president of our San Francisco Bay Area SCI chapter and on the board for nine years in different capacities, president of the Mzuri Safari Club, Trustee and current president of the Mzuri Wildlife Foundation. I was Area Chairman, Zone Chairman and for the last five years District Chairman of Ducks Unlimited as well as on the board of our chapter of the Mule Deer Foundation just to name a few. Certainly my credentials in the hunting world are equal to or superior to your own.
For your information, I do not expect a B&C animal every time I hunt. I would, however, like to make the SCI record book, even at the bronze level. That is why we pay the hunting fees for guided hunts rather than do self-guided hunts.
There were many times that I left a hunt without an animal because I am a trophy hunter. In this instance, however, your guide told me to shoot an animal that was clearly not even close to a trophy animal. He admitted his mistake - you didn't!
Your "investigation" of me as a hunting client is self-serving. I have hunted all over the world and many if not all my guides have become my life-long friends.
As for your less than generous offer, an apology would have been a nice beginning. I would hardly feel welcome at any of your hunting camps and I therefore decline your offer.

In regards to your fax from Gabriel Tabib, there's not much more I can add that was not in the letter I sent to Mr. Tabib. He did not say anything at all to us until he read in The Hunting Report (five months later) that I was giving some hunts or money back on other hunts to clients that deserved it.
Mr. Tabib turned down SCI bucks and pursued a B&C buck twice. He also had two different English-speaking guides. After he passed up a buck that would have scored over 100, the guide didn't feel like he could please him, so we changed guides.
Also, Mr. Tabib rode to Phoenix with us instead of driving back to Hermosillo with the Mexican outfitter and flying out from there. After we got to Tucson, he realized he was supposed to fly out of L.A. He never did say anything negative at all to us about the hunt. Five months later we get this letter.

In addition he is a friend, I am sure any trouble encountered on one of his hunts was beyond his control.
