Once again I cannot say enough about this hunt. If you are considering a black bear hunt this is the one to do. Lots of bears, active baits, great people to hunt with. I have made friends on this hunt that I hope to keep for a long time. I will not hestitate to hunt all of the other species this outfitter offers in future years.

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
I first learned about Alaska Private Guide Service a few years ago when I observed my taxidermist working on an honest-to-goodness 10-foot-plus brown bear mount. I had to know the whos and wheres, and before I knew it, I was booked with "Smokey" Don Duncan to hunt Alaskan brown bears in April 2001 in Alaskan Game Management Unit 17B north of Dillingham, which is on the Bering Sea. I hunted out of a tented spike camp miles away from the cabin that had served as the base camp we flew into. My guide and I traveled every day on snowmobiles in search of bears, and although it sure seemed like we saw every other kind of animal possible (including but not limited to wolverines, caribou, moose, red fox, porcupine and Arctic hare) we never came across our shooter bear. The weather had been very strange that year, and what slight winter there was had come very late to the region. Speculation was the strange weather conditions had disrupted hibernation patterns.
Don Duncan felt bad that I did not even have an opportunity at a legal bear, so he offered me a special deal to return. I had enjoyed such a wonderful wilderness adventure and had so much fun that I not only accepted the offer but also booked my 18-year-old son, Corey, to come along.
When I returned a year later in April 2002, the hunting conditions could not have been more different than the previous year. We spotted fresh tracks, bear dens and bears daily. On the first full day of my hunt I had a nine-foot, 1,000-pound chocolate Alaskan brown boar on the ground by 1 pm, taking him at a close 55 yards. I was then free to hunt ptarmigan and Arctic hare the remainder of the time.
Corey took a little longer to kill his bear and in the process covered miles and miles of beautiful wilderness country on snowmobile, accompanied by his guide. On the sixth day, Corey took his blonde, 8½ foot Alaskan brown bear at a distant 400 yards. He then, too, enjoyed hunting ptarmigan and Arctic hares for a couple of days. The success of Duncan's other hunters mirrored ours. Nine hunters spread out over the month of April took eight bears, and the only unsuccessful hunter declined to pursue any bear that he was not assured was bigger than 10-feet. One hunter did indeed take a bear larger than 10-feet and several others exceed 9- feet. At least four hunters took their bears on the first full day of their hunt. Some then chose to leave camp early to return to civilization while others, like me, elected to enjoy what time I could in the Alaskan wilderness.
The terrain in the area consists of mountains, hills, frozen lakes, meadows and woods. A hunter is well advised to know the performance of his gun and bullet because shots can be as short as my 55-yard shot or as long as Corey's 400-yard shot. Our personal examples are not unique. A number of bears were shot at distances greater than 300 yards, and one was shot by a very nervous hunter and guide at 20 feet!
Duncan and his guides perform all trophy care preparations on clients' bears. They will even handle arrangements for the shipment of the hide and skull to a taxidermist or to a hunter's residence in the lower 48. This being a one-guide-per-hunter operation, the hunter does not have to worry about being abandoned to do all of his hide fleshing and salting or skull preparation after the bear is on the ground. The guides and camp staff do this work.
This was a great hunt and thoroughly enjoyable trip. In my opinion, in addition to having excellent guides and staff, Duncan has three major advantages to his operation. First, his utilization of a fleet of snowmobiles gives his hunters and guides mobility that most other spring bear outfitters do not have. Being able to move when the bears are not where they are supposed to be is invaluable.
Second, Duncan offers great recreation, even after the bear is down. There are a lot of ptarmigan and huge Arctic hares in the area that can be hunted on the general Alaskan hunting license. My son and I found the ptarmigan to be a bit of a challenge with a .22 rifle, so I will be taking a shotgun with me when I return. Additionally, riding snowmobiles on trails that can be as flat or as mountainous as you want to make them is great fun and exercise.
Third, Duncan offers intriguing pricing alternatives. A 10-day hunt at Duncan's flat rate costs $8,500. Duncan also offers, however, a "kill fee" hunt for which he charges a base price of $6,000 (for the same 10 days), but then the hunter pays a fee of $1,000 per foot for each foot the bear exceeds six feet. For example, my nine-foot bear would cost a total of $9,000 ($6,000 base price plus $1,000 per foot for each of the three feet beyond six feet) on the kill fee program.
While one should be in reasonably good health to enjoy this hunt, it does not require the same conditioning as a high elevation hunt for Rocky Mountain elk or mule deer. Duncan and his guides take good care of their hunters and, as a consequence, most of their hunters are return clients.

Condition Comments: |
We were very happy with the bears, both size and condition. In this area an eight foot black bear is a monster. Excellent game condition. Most bears we saw were large, but not fat. Coats had very long thick hair. |
