SAA would not let us carry personal luggage onto flight to Windhoek. This luggage was not locked since it stayed with me - nice camera was stolen after I turned it over to SAA. Same thing happened to hunting partner on same flight next day. Moral: lock even your carry-on luggage! |

|
Jaco and Mare' van der Merwe are brothers who own/operate African Twilight Safaris. We hunted on their private 109,000 acre farm (no game fences.) This was my 4th African safari, and the first with African Twilight Safaris. The hunt exceeded our expectations. Both Jaco and Mare' worked very hard, and they are skilled and personable PHs. We saw tremendous amounts of game and took fantastic trophies (my father and a friend were also hunting, along with my two sons.) I am not a "tape measure hunter", but the van der Merwes are SCI measurers so they measured all the trophies - all but two made the "SCI book" with half gold or silver medals. At one point I could see 40+ hartebeest, 20+ springbok, 12+ gemsbok, 12+ zebra and a few kudus. This is all on open land with no game fences. Another time we had 3 shootable kudu bulls in view at once. If you want a leopard, this is the place to go. We had 4 separate large males feeding (and have the trail cam pix to show it). The largest difficulty was predicting which bait to sit on! If we had only one or two cats to focus on we might have connected with one sooner. (In fact, we briefly saw a leopard at 10:00 one morning while looking for plains game.) They average losing one cow, sheep or goat per week from predators, so the cats have been around for the 90+ years the van der Merwe family has been on the property. Mare's wife Irma supervised the cooking - the food was excellent. They were extremely accommodating for our entire family, and we have made life-long friends. Net - I cannot recommend African Twilight Safaris highly enough - you will not be disappointed!

United was awful, planes were cramped and late, and worst of all they didn't transfer my luggage to SAA in Dullas even though they're affiliated, which cost me a day of hunting. SAA did everything they could to get my bags to me ASAP. The seats were larger and the staff much more helpfull. I'd rate United a D and SAA an A. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
Luggage was a day late (curse United) Bowstring cable got cut with a broadhead and my backup bowstring was no good, lost 1/2 day getting a new string. Wounded a kudu that we never recovered - bowsights were off and he jumped the string. I got sick, which cost another 1/2 day. None of these were anything to do with ATS, in fact they did everything they could to help me fix them ASAP. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
5 1-shot bowkills. The kudu bull was the largest animal I'd ever taken with stick and string, downright spiritual. We captured most of the kills on camera. |

Yes |
| Why? |
They do everything they advertise, no hidden costs, gracious hosts, very nice accommodations, huge ranches with abundant game, vehicles in good shape, and work very hard to get you the trophies. Everthing was much better than I expected. |

|
ATS's main concession is in the heart of leopard and Hartmann's zebra country on 109K acres. They take a lot of huge leopard and the Hartmann's zebra I shot was close to 1000lbs. This is 100% free-range fair chase hunting. No farm-raised animals released in a high-fenced pen here... Most of their clients are gun hunters but Mare' and Jaco are avid bowhunters and took me to their favorite ambush sites. They both crave hunting so much that I think Mare' was more excited than I was after every animal I killed. I asked Mare' not to tell me the measurements on the animals I took but he said most scored Namibian gold. My point is they've got trophy animals and he'll put you on them.

I have hunted with this outfitter two times and will be taking my granddaughter in 2008. This is a family operation two brothers and wives and one other PH. I have had nothing but good hunting, wild country, and truly good and honest folks, that will be your friends when you return home. I have also done much sightseeing with this outfitter after my safaris. Wonderful and very interesting, no problems ever. I like to talk about Africa, so if you have any question call me.

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
I would (and did) recommend this hunt to a friend for a great hunting experience, smooth organization, and fine hospitality. However, for a first time American hunter, there may be better choices, since terrain is not typical of the African savannah bushveld. Nor would this hunt be attractive to the hunter who wants a comfortable way to collect some trophies.
The hunt is on a 10,000+ acre private ranch owned by the von der Merwe family, and the hunter is guided by one of the owners personally. Accommodations are in a guesthouse (all amenities) and catering is done by one of the wives. They take only one hunting party at a time and make great efforts to assure their clients' enjoyment. For example, they took us on a full day excursion (non-hunting) into the nearby Namib Desert and national park. Daily rates and trophy fees are comparatively low, even within Namibia, since the owner/outfitter does not have to pay a concession fee to a landowner or third party.
The ranch is on a high plateau rising to broken mountainous terrain. Only the area near the main road contains cattle fences, while backcountry where most hunting takes place is unfenced. It is arid open country with little vegetation, so the game, while there is plenty of it, is not thick on the ground. A fair amount of traveling and glassing is required, and the hunter must expect to be spotted by some game as soon as he has seen it himself. This necessitates good shooting (all my shots were beyond 200 yards), following a sometimes difficult and lengthy stalk that may not be successful. For example, we stalked my gold medal oryx (the same animal identified by a distinct marking) for several hours over three days. The man who enjoys this kind of hunting will have a good time.
The available game includes oryx (plentiful), springbok (plentiful), Hartmann's (mountain) zebra (plentiful), kudu, blesbok, steenbok, common duiker, and Klipspringer (plentiful). The hills contain a good number of leopards (we identified at least 5 different animals). There are also spotted hyenas (not seen), baboons, and jackals. Shooting jackals is encouraged as means of predator control. Additional species (e.g. eland) are available on an adjacent ranch (not visited). Leopard can be hunted over bait. My hunt was with hounds, and it was a joy to see the dogs work. The hounds' man (a professional hunter himself who was brought in from South Africa) was professionally competent and personally engaging. His basic charge was $2,000, plus a success fee that was credited against the outfitters trophy fee.
Skinning and field preparation of trophies was done meticulously, and trophy preparation for shipment itself was arranged quickly and professionally.
