| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Taking a beautiful 45" sable with classic shape and horns with thick bases. The serenity of the Mulobezi GMA with it's beautiful Dambos. Having my wife behind me on the stalks! The glory of autumn leaves and wonderful weather - Africa at its best. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
We took three different repellants for tse tse flies and the best was Avon Skin So Soft. I always recommend taking protein bars in a day pack. Don't assume there will be a backup rifle in your safari camp. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
yes |
| Why? |
Mulobezi and some of the other GMA's surrounding Kafue offer what must be the best sable hunting in Afria. Probably not the place for a first African safari though. |

After a great trip to Joberg on true flat bed seats in Business Class - worth the money/miles - our safari got off to a difficult start when we learned that the rifle did not make it. The Swissport baggage folks informed us that the rifle case was crushed in Atlanta and would not arrive until the next evening. After overnighting in Joberg we flew to Livingstone Zambia where we awaited the rifle. In case it was damaged we frantically searched for a backup rifle as our PH did not have another rifle. It takes 7 days to get paperwork approved by Zambian officials and we did not want to delay our hunt. The rifle made it to Joberg but not to Livingstone. The Swissport folks in Joberg said the police believed the rifle to be damaged. We said not to send it as we had to depart for our hunting concession. In the meantime, Howard Shackleton, owner of Shackleton Lodge on the Zambezi offered to rent his 30-06. It was over 50 years old as was the fixed 3x Weaver scope. Hardly what one would like on an expensive hunt but I was grateful to have something besides Kevin's .458 Lott for plainsgame. We had scheduled one night at Shackletons both going into Mulobezi and on our return as it was a convenient stopping point before embarking on a rough 7 hour trip into the concession. The rifle proved adequate on sighting in but I decided not to take any shot over 150 yards. We were at the southern camp in Mulobezi which is a nice setup. The concession is huge necessitating long 2 hour rides into the beautiful Dambos which held most of the game although I took my Sable much closer to camp. I really wanted a nice Sable and was thrilled to make a successful stalk on a beautiful 45" bull. I also took a really nice Leichtenstein Hartebeest fairly close to camp. I had never hunted Warthog during my 3 other Africa hunts but had fun taking a huge tusker. The Reedbuck was one of the smartest animals I have hunted in Africa and I was happy with a very nice buck. Kevin Louw is a very hard working PH and knew the area well which is important for such a large GMA. My wife enjoyed the safari despite breaking out from the tse tse fly bites on the 7th day. This GMA is remote and beautiful, bordering Kafue National Park. Just be prepared for 3-5 hours driving on rough roads every day. One day we drove over 150km and much of that was through very boring (no wildlife) hardwood forests enroute to the Dambos. Animals were not skittish nor overhunted. Anti-poaching patrols were encountered and we saw no signs of poaching. Zambian Wildlife does a good job in this area and I highly recommend Mulobezi. We saw tons of lion and leopard tracks. This area has few cape buffalo and I would not take out a license for one. We enjoyed our visit to village schools and also a meeting with the area Chief. I will never forget the kid's faces when we gave them a real soccer ball! This hunt was a last minute booking as I had a hunt scheduled in the Caprivi (Namibia) for Sable which was cancelled just 10 days before our scheduled departure. I went to work contacting everybody I knew to see if we could find a sable hunt in Zambia as we did not want to lose our flight reservations. It was a miracle to find an open quota with Ian Gloss' operation and Kevin had a two week break so we did a mad rush to get all the paperwork completed and left as scheduled. As a postscript, we examined the rifle at the Tambo police station on our return. The case was indeed crushed. I had to unlock it and then have the police pry it open. Since the case could not be reused, the Swissport folks shipped it home several weeks later in another case. Delta airlines has reimbursed me for my rifle, scope, and rifle case.

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
Difficult hunting but we understood that going in. Low antelope populations. Hilly and rocky terrain makes stalking antelope over distances on foot impossible to follow spoor. All hunting was spot first, stalk second. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Cape buffalo was taken on first day. We spotted the lone Dugga Boy feeding 1,500 yards away in a scenic river valley and stalked to within 20 yards of him where he was brutalizing a river bank tree. He then walked right to us and the first kill shot was made at 14 paces. Could not have been a better total experience. It had it all. Lion encounters (three large males) at night while driving back to camp was surreal. Numerous elephant encounters. Being in Africa again. Africa! Observing my 32 year old son, Chas, handling and managing his stalks and shootings with our PH. |

Recommendations: |
|
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
Yes |
| Why? |
But I would recommend going later in the season (August/September) when it's much drier and the overgrown bush is less problematic. We knew going in that this would pose an added difficulty, but it was the time when we could both be away from family/work. |

We hunted sunrise to sunset and had lunch in the bush for 10 straight days. Enjoyed every moment of it, even the expected ennui. While we did not get any of our antelope, the Cape buffalo spot, stalk and kill was as good as it gets and worth every penny for hunt. We took fabulous animal encounter photos and simply had a great time with our hunting team. Treasured memories (again) for a lifetime for a father/son duo. Already scheming to get back to Africa.

ADDITIONAL
HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
Be ready to do your fair share of walking in terrain that is anything but flat. Also Graeme was an excellent PH and I would love to hunt with him and The African Safari Company again in the near future.
