If you want the Sitka Black-Tailed Deer, this is a place to get one. The Randalls are great hosts and have a wonderful operation. I'm thinking of booking a bear hunt with them. |

I booked this hunt with a friend in late 2010 to fill our North American deer slam. We met Josh and Luke Randall at the 2009 SCI Show where they had donated a similar hunt. After shopping around we decided to book with Afognak before the 2011 show. The Randalls (Shannon and her sons Luke and Josh) run a wonderful operation in a slice of heaven on Seal Bay, Afognak Is. Alaska that their family has owned for several decades. From the moment of arrival on the float plane to the point of departure, the scenery and the beauty of the place is breathtaking with eagles soaring, whales breaching and otters playing. Hunting is from a boat as it weaves in and out of the many inlets and bays. We were fortunate enough to have arrived following a week of snow and cold, so the deer were plentiful along the shoreline. We each took two deer within a couple of days and decided to buy third tags each! Of the six deer, the largest scored about 95 SCI and four made the minimum 80" requirement. The trip also included duck hunting and fishing and we had plenty of fun doing both. The camp services were first class with comfortable sleeping accommodations in hand-built log cabins (more like homes as they are hardly cabins!). The food was excellent -- particularly when comprised of fresh backstrap, duck breast and rockfish!! I'd highly recommend Afognak Wilderness Lodge for the deer hunter, or even as a place just to go to enjoy the scenery. We're both thinking about booking bear hunts there as well.

We saw 9 to 15 bear every day, a far cry from a different outfitter some 3 years ago where we saw only one black and one brown bear in 10 days in spite of moving camp. These guys know where the bear are and how to target them! Super accommodations and food! A superb spot to take your loved one in the summer time. Boating, fishing, game viewing. The perfect place to really relax. Five star all th eway including food. |
