SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
We were very lucky! A very hot week! Moose were not moving too much. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
I saw in five days around 10 different bears from blonde, gray to my big chocolate 9.2 brown, the year before I got a small 6.6 foot blonde grizzly and came back for a bigger one and got just that! |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
A couple of the best rain gear and comfortable boots. Therma cell for mosquitos. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
yes |
| Why? |
Because Bob and his crew will not rest until you get your animals, however in Alaska the weather doesn't cooperate at all sometimes. |

I don't think there is a place to go and hunt moose or grizzly/ brown bear, where you could say it is easy! But with this guy, spring or the so called river hunt for grizzly/ brown bear you cannot come back empty handed unless you are looking to break a record! Moose on the other hand, if the weather doesn't cooperate you will need tons of luck and be able to do some walking! Great country, lots of spike camps and many years of experience is what Bob provides. Good luck!

| Hunting Experience: |
Great, a dream come true! One hell of an experience flying in and out of spike camps, walking through the tundra is extremely hard: Bob and his crew is one of the best outfitters I`ve been with, lots of experience and goes out the whole mile to help you get your trophy and keep you safe! Beautiful main camp! 110% recommendable! |
| Physical Condition: |
Great and you should be, cause that Alaska tundra is no easy walk in the park. If needed there are chances that the animals might be up a mountain and to get to them aint fun. |

Bob knows his area better than you can imagine. So many flying hours over his area guarantee you a good spike camp and the peace of mind that he will never overlook your safety. His guides are basically trained by himself and are well experienced young guys as enthusiastic as the hunter. Moose hunt in Alaska ain`t easy and it`s not because of the lack of game, it is because of the tundra, being in good shape will help you and your guide improve your chances in returning as happy as a child returning from Disneyland! Thanks to other reports of other fellow hunters which only said great things about Bob and his organization, was that I decided to book with him and even convinced my brother to go with me. Guess what, we are going back with him on 2010, we fell in love with the experience, the thrill of the hunt and obviously the number of trophy animals in his area! You will only regret if you don`t give yourself the chance of the experience!

Highlights of hunt.
We did a 5.1 mile stalk. Used snowshoes when we crossed deep snow (Sherry did a great job of helping with putting snowshoes on and off). Crossed a stream and the final 500 yards with the bear watching guide and hunter which was a very emotional experience. The final mistake of the bear was to walk toward us, Brownie should have left the country. My first shot was at 260 yards using a 416 Rem, 350 gr. A-frame bullet. The stalk started at 9:30 am (first day of hunt) and I got my shot at 4:30 pm. What an adventure and memory of a great hunt.
Special Equipment recommendations.
Swarovski spotting scope STS 80 - This spotting scope played a major role in judging the size of the bear at 4.8 miles which ultimately helped make the decision to undertake a very long stalk.
Would you recommend this hunt to a friend?
Three words describe a Bob Adams hunt - emotion, adventure and memories. I would also recommend the use of a professional booking agent - I use Jim McCarthy Adventures. Jim has provided me with honest facts and expectations on hunting trips since 1983. Simple formula - honest facts and expectations equal reality.

This is an awesome hunt in beautifull country with an extremely experienced outfit. My guide Mason Kiebert could not have been better, and the same can be said for the entire operation. That being said, it is a hard core hunt in rough country. My guide and I lived 10 days in spike camps which consisted of a small tent for each of us, and essentially whatever we could pack into the small plane that dropped us off ( not much). It is quite possible to hike 10 + miles per day, and lots of rain. There was all kinds of game, huge moose ( the average for all hunters out that week was 69"), lots of Brown/ Grizzly Bears, black bears and caribou.

Bob Adams has a first class outfit. Bob's family is heavily involved in the operation. He has a group of guides that are dedicated, care about the game and care about the hunter being successful. He has a group of packers that work hard to get your meat and antlers to where they can be picked up. Main camp is comfortable and even includes a shower. Spike camps are well equiped and checked daily. You need to be in good shape to get the most benefit from this hunt. You will do a lot of walking over uneven terrain and through areas of heavy brush. You will glass for game at great distances, then find the best way to get to it.

Saw 300 cows and only two bulls that were shootable their standards. Quote from Bob Adams Publication: "Game populations are forever moving and the need to be relocated sometimes makes the difference between a successful hunt or not. Bob and his pilots spend many hours observing game populations from the air". When we did not see much we were not moved. |

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to respond to Mr. Harry Cross's letter. He failed to bring up a few points, which I will do in this letter. Harry Cross had his son along who is about 50 years old. Harry is about 70 or so. His son did get a real nice caribou. He also said that he did not see any good bull caribou, however, on his first day of the hunt he had a possible B&C caribou come into the area but could not make to walk to the bull saying it was too far. My guide Chris stated that it was one of the biggest bulls he had seen in a few years!!! I believe that Harry's age had an affect on not being able to make the stalk on this bull. Do not get me wrong, for his age he did get around better than most but he just wasn't ready to make the mile or so walk. This bull stayed around for another day but was a little farther out. Harry also stated that he was not moved. This is incorrect. We did move him. Harry insisted on being moved back to the main lodge from his spike camp because all his gear was wet. He did not have good rain gear. So we ended up flying him into main camp for a hot shower and to dry out his gear. We flew him back out to his spike camp to rejoin his son and hunt again. Apparently, there was a disagreement between him and his son and his son chose to leave spike camp and his father behind. Harry's son returned to the main lodge and hunted out of there for two days and got a good caribou. I'd also like to mention that all five of out other camps were getting bull caribou despite the extremely warm weather we had for the past two weeks. This unusual weather did impact the movement of the caribou herd. Where generally we are overrun with caribou, including large bulls, we had to work very hard yet successfully at getting them. Attitude of the hunter plays an enormous part in this success. I feel it is unfair to my guide, Chris; my booker, Jim McCarthy; and our hunting operation to give this negative assessment so late after the hunt. It is my written policy to all hunter that if they have complaints about their hunt they are to express them directly to me during the time they are at camp, so that I can deal with their situation. Mr. Harry Cross chose not to honor this opportunity. Bob Adams and Staff

As I flew over the area on my way into camp, I saw lots of moose and later saw two grizzlies that night. On the first day of the hunt, the guide put me on a large bull moose. During the stalk on the moose, a grizzly bear appeared out of the brush only 33 steps from us. This is the bear I killed. The next day, I shot the same moose I stalked the day before and discovered bear claws and bites on the animal. The bear I shot the day before had apparently been hunting this moose at the same time we were. As for the caribou, the migration had just started coming through when I was there, and I shot the first two

I am not a current subscriber, but plan to be soon. I want to file a report for my moose and caribou hunt, taken in September 1999. The outfitter was Bob Adams of Adams Guide Service in Eagle River, Alaska. The guide was Wendell Runyon. I hunted form September 1, 1999 through September 9, 1999 in the Kilbuck Mountains in western Alaska. I took one moose of average size and one caribou of average size. I saw 15 moose (eight bulls and seven cows), 6,000 caribou and seven grizzly bears.
This trip had come highly recommended by Jack Atcheson & Sons and all references I spoke to. Every aspect of the hunt lived up to it's billing. Bob Adams runs a 100 percent quality operation. They were organized and professional. The equipment in the spike camp was very good. The main camp was comfortable and quite plush considering the remote location. My guide, Wendell Runyon, was very experienced which greatly aided the success of my hunt. He hunted at a pace I could keep up with and taught me a great deal about Alaska and the game I was hunting for the first time. Game could be considered plentiful, especially caribou. I had numerous chances to take a second caribou much larger than the one I did harvest. My moose was on the average to small size. Larger moose were seen but they stayed in dense cover making stalks almost impossible. The moose were not in the rut and did not respond to calling. Anything negative about the hunt is totally my fault for not getting in good enough shape, as Bob Adams had strongly recommended. Five of the seven hunters being guided during the nine days got every species of animal they went after. One failed to get a moose, but he had hunted with Bob before and was holding out for a major trophy. He did get two caribou. A second failed to get a moose, but it did not seem the guide or outfitter was at fault. Adams Guide Service gets my highest recommendation. I will hunt with them again!

Saw seven grizzly in six days, not in season. Moose were not rutting and did not respond to calling. Saw on 65-inch moose but was unable to get it due to thick cover. I saw over 7,000 caribou over ten days. Many larger than I shot. |
