|
On November 6, 2004, we left Dallas for Madrid, Spain. My wife, Lori and I were on our way...to begin our third hunt in Spain. With us on this hunt were Val and Don Senter, also of Dallas, Texas. Arriving at the airport in Madrid on Sunday morning, we were met by our guide, Borja Azpilicueta, and driven to the home of Koki and Fernando Saiz, the owners of Acisa Spain Hunting Company. From there we split up. Lori and Don and Val headed to the south of Spain, specifically, the province of Cataluna, stopping for the night at the Parador de Alcaniz, formerly a 12th century castle. The next morning, we drove into the mountains to hunt the Beceite Ibex. It was hard to see the ibex because the trees were so thick. We glassed and walked throughout the day, and at approximately 5 p.m., we spotted the trophy I wanted to take. I could tell from the direction that the ibex was traveling that he should eventually come into a clearing that was below me on the mountain. I took up a shooting position so I would have a clear shot at him when he entered the clearing. About thirty minutes later, the ibex came into the clearing, the very one that I had anticipated he would. I waited until he was broadside to me, and then squeezed off the shot. I hit him in the shoulder at 290 yards for a one-shot kill. For this hunt, I used a 7-mag rifle with 165-grain bullets. The ibex was a beautiful trophy and had horns that were 32 inches long with 9.5-inch bases. The ibex was 12 years old, predicated on the rings on its horns. We had a celebration dinner at the Parador de Alcaniz that night; then, we drove back to Madrid and met up with Lori and Val and Don, who had been in the south of Spain, where Don was able to take a good Rhonda Ibex. The next day, we all drove to the small town of Riano, in the North of Spain in the province of Castilla Leon, and arrived in the middle of a beautiful snowstorm. The town was situated on Lake Riano and was surrounded by the lovely Cantabrain Mountain Range. Here I would be hunting for the Cantabrian Chamois. The next was bitterly cold, and snow covered everything. We set off early to look for the chamois. I drove with Borja and the local gamekeeper up into the Cantabrian Mountains. It had snowed so much that you could not drive on the mountain roads, so we had to walk. It was again snowing heavily by the time we walked to the top of the mountain. There we found a cabin, where we waited for the chamois to start down the mountain. It began snowing so hard that our visibility was no more than fifty yards. At that point, we began to descend the mountain so that we could, hopefully, achieve better visibility. When we were approximately two-thirds of the way down the mountain, we spotted a nice trophy across a small canyon and slightly above us. The wind was blowing hard, and the shot was 260 yards; therefore, I knew there would be lateral movement of the bullet, but just how much movement, I did not know for certain. I told my Professional Hunter to shout out to me how far to the left or the right I missed, if I did, in fact, miss the shot. I did miss with the first shot, and Borja let me know that I shot in front of the chamois. The chamois ran about 50 more yards up the mountain and stopped again. I now knew how much to adjust my shot for the wind. I then made a clean one-shot kill. The rifle I used was a 7 mag with a 165-grain bullet. It was a good chamois with 7-inch horns. The gamekeeper said the chamois was 10 years old. After the hunt, we stopped at another cabin and had a wonderful lunch, which the guides had packed in and which included many local delicacies. Especially delicious was the Iberian ham. Upon returning to the lodge, I learned that Don had also taken a good chamois, so the evening was certainly a time of celebration. The scenery was absolutely beautiful, and the food was superior. This area of Spain was one I would heartily recommend. On the way back to Madrid, we stopped at another Parador outside of Leon for lunch. This trip provided so much history, so much food, and of course, excellent hunting. It was truly an exceptional first-class experience.

This was a most enjoyable hunt. My good friend Leo Mack and his wife Kathleen, along with my wife Kathleen, had a great time together. Leo and I did the hunting and the girls did the shopping. It was nice to be able to hunt during the day and know the wives were enjoying the Spanish country side. We are looking forward to returning in 2004 for the other two ibex, and visiting more of the interesting places in Spain.

This is a quasi-touristic hunt experience. You hunt morning and evening (three hours&three hours) mid-day is spent at up scale restaurant, sight seeing and sometimes siesta. All guides are university educated - the best experience by me in 15 + international hunts - but you must find value in this.
As hunting guides they are very good, but not better than some other less educated ones that I have experience; not a rough-hunting only directed event. You must find value in the overall. The Pinos Altos home is beautiful with upscale décor and staff/companions.
|
|
Not physically difficult in La Mancha, rolling terrain mountains could be challenging. The Pinos Altos experience would be excellent for an older or physically impaired hunter - good roads, gentle terrain, high seats available, covered, excellent stairs. Also very good for non-hunting companions (both male and female)!

It has been a while since I have corresponded with you, but I wanted to share with you and your readers a wonderful trip my wife, Sona, and I had in Spain this last November. We purchased a fallow deer hunt at the local Safari Club chapter that was donated by Fernando Saiz. After purchasing the hunt, we upgraded to include a free-ranging mouflon hunt and Beceite Ibex.
We flew to Madrid in early November and were met by Juan Mitjans who works with Fernando. Juan serves as guide, driver and translator. He graduated from the University of Texas in game management; thus, his English is perfect and his knowledge of wildlife is excellent. After clearing customs in Madrid, which was quite easy even with a firearm, we traveled to the Valencia region on the Mediterranean coast. The Valencia region reminds me of Southern California with similar weather and vast groves of citrus trees. We enjoyed some wonderful seafood meals.
The first three days we hunted north of Valencia in the mountains for Beceite Ibex. The weather was unseasonably hot and we spotted only a few Ibex not of the trophy quality we were seeking. We then moved to a different region to hunt mouflon and on the first afternoon I was successful in taking a wonderful trophy. My wife and I, along with Juan and a local guide, made a long stalk and about one hour before dark were successful in harvesting a great mouflon ram. Later on, after seeing the pictures, Fernando indicated it is one of the largest mouflon taken by any of his clients in more than twenty years.
Following the mouflon hunt, we stayed at a small hotel in a local town and had a wonderful and festive dinner. The next day we returned to Valencia to hunt for Ibex. Fortunately, the weather had turned cooler and that afternoon I took a great Beceite Ibex, almost at dark. That evening we stayed at a country inn that was truly four-star in quality. As a side note, our stay at the inn included a room for Juan, a room for my wife and I, an elegant dinner, and breakfast the next morning at a total cost of $190. We then journeyed to Fernando's estate, which is west of Madrid, and spent 1 1/2 days hunting fallow deer and, the last evening, I was successful in taking a great trophy animal. We then returned to Madrid and spent the night at Fernando's home, which is furnished with a wonderful collection of wild game hunting books and some great hunting trophies. We then flew home and again experienced a trouble-free departure from Madrid.
Fernando and his team do a marvelous job for the hunter. His employees have excellent vehicles, know the country and, for the most part, are all English fluent. This was our first trip to Spain, but certainly will not be the last. The total cost of the hunt, not including airfare, approximated $20,000. Should any of your readers have questions about the hunt or hunting with Fernando's group, don't hesitate to give me a call at (562) 595-7401. Incidentally, Fernando also provides driven red-legged partridge hunts from his estancia.

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
None. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Fernando and Koki Saiz hunt, tour, entertain and otherwise take care of their clients with care and in great style. They and Nacho Arias are dedicated to pleasing their visitors. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Good boots for ibex hunt. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
Yes |
| Why? |
I would recommend the hunt without reservation. All but the gredos ibex hunt is "European civilized." The ibex hunt reminds one of a North American sheep climb. |
