Have you ever thought of doing a DRIVEN bear hunt?

This driven brown bear hunt is all that you can imagine and more and I was very fortunate to select a good outfitter. Hunt Romania run by Marius Merutiu out of Bistrita in rural Romania.

Ive traveled all over the world but have never been to the former soviet bloc country of Romania and I could not really know what I was in for. I did some checking and learned that Bucharest was a pretty modern city with good food and wine and once I spoke to a couple of Americans who had hunted with Marius and after looking up his outfit in the Hunting report I signed up.

From Bucharest you can drive or fly to Cluj-Naboca where Mariuss guys pick you up at the airport and take you to Bistrita. The drive takes around 6 hors non-stop and if the weather is OK, its not too bad.

Once you get to Bistrita you are checked into a nice hotel with good, clean rooms and really good food and wine and breakfast is included. The car ride to the area you hunt in is maybe 40-45 mins away.

I was picked up in the morning after a nice breakfast and taken to the meeting location for the days Bear Drive. Now I never thought about Brown bear in the countryside of Romania but they can get pretty big and they are fairly plentiful. Ive been told and have seen pictures of multiple bear kills during drives where a number of hunters are set up in different stations along a route where these Romanian forest rangers Drive the bears. Like a driven boar hunt, but we are talking brown bears here. When I first heard of this concept I was a bit skeptical but these men along with their dogs and rifles and shotguns of different varieties are tough and brave. The forest areas where they drive the bears are like the Alders in Alaska where its hard to even walk through. As a matter of fact, after one particular drive, one of the drivers had to go back to his place to pick up another shot gun because he broke the butt stock off going through this dense stuff. Fortunately for the hunter, you wait for the bear to come to you in a more open area.

My hunt was a bit different in that I was the only hunter. I was told the outfitter had one tag left for that particular area and after negotiating a flat fee for any size bear I could shoot, I was ready.

I have to admit that there were times before the hunt and getting there that I questioned my sanity about having Brown Bear being driven towards me but I was told that at least one guide would be by my side with another rifle and he would protect me. Well, for the times we were up in tree blinds, that was fine, but let me tell you, when you are lying on the forest floor or standing behind some trees as evening closes in, in the middle of a forest with brown bears, one guy with you with a gun and a large brown bear potentially coming at you does not give you a great deal of confidence.

However, Marius and his guys were fantastic. It took the 5th day for me to take my bear and honestly, even if I did not take this nice bear I would have been satisfied with the whole experience. The areas were gorgeous, the people warm, friendly and welcoming and the food and wine fantastic!

My bear was amazing for me. I was told he was between 750-800 pounds and was 470-500 CIC in size. Certainly bigger than I would have imagined was in those woods and this was a fairly early Spring hunt so this bear in the fall would have been another 100-150 pounds. The drive started in the morning just after breakfast and the rangers were on this bear from the start of the day.

As normal, the drivers and their dogs go to a location a couple of miles or so from where we set up to get ready for the drive. We did one drive and the bear decided he did not want to go in the direction they were pushing him so we had to set up in a different spot. After we were in position for about 15-20 mins you could hear the drivers yelling and trying to push the bear towards our location. On this drive we saw the bear briefly come out of the thick cover for a minuet of two with 3 or 4 dogs around him and you could see this big bear was not intimidated or afraid in the least. I tried to move up from the position I was in to get a shot but the angle in the woods was wrong&.there were too many big trees between the bear and me and I could not get a clear shot for more than a split second and didnt want to risk a wild shot.

After another drive where this same bear got into an area that was just too thick and one of the drivers broke off his butt stock, the decision was made to go have lunch. The lunches were not ham sandwiches on some slabs of bread but delicious, warm sit down lunches fit for a prince accompanied by your favorite beverage. The talk over lunch was what the plan would be. The drivers knew where the bear was and they did not think he would leave that section of forest so the decision was made to go back to where I had seen him.

By 5:30-6:00 PM we were set up and heard the drivers coming. They were yelling, the dogs were barking and occasionally the drivers would fire off their shotguns to drive this bear. And sure enough, out he came. He came out pretty much where he was earlier that day but this time I was set up on the sticks in a clear area when Marius pointed to where he was coming out a little over a hundred yards away. We must have been there for at least 45 mins scanning this wide, forested area but once Marius pointed I was right on him. He came out slowly but must have smelled us and kept looking back knowing the dogs and drivers were behind him so he started to circle back into the thick bush and thats when I knew that this was my chance. I held the cross hairs on him as he turned into the brush and touched off the Blaser hitting him right below his right side rib cage as he was quartering away. The 8mm did its job as the next thing I saw were his feet kicking in the air. My shot went diagonally through and across his body exiting out the top of his left shoulder&&there was a tremendous blood trail and he only went about 20 yards before collapsing in the thick forest cover

What a hunt. A really good animal, great excitement and fantastic people. The only sad part was that the bear injured one of the dogs so badly, it died a few days later.

Thanks to Marius and his crew I had a great memorable hunt in the forests of Romania.
