The PH (Bruce) has heaps of experience and has trained the local person so it's a real "kick" for hunting buffalos. From the camp there are a few rivers where the jungle is growing. Between those rivers approximately 300-1000m there is an open plain (grass 20cm up to 100cm). You will start in the morning after breakfast with a car to get approximately 5km far from the camp where the buffalos are. If you are getting closer you start hunting the buffalos. If you got him the locals will butcher the buffalo and get the meat back to the camp. Taste's excellent. Then you go for a jungle hunt (short distance means close in work - but real good). After, before night you go again for open plain hunt and back to camp. Real nice cool nights. And important everything is safe.
First the place is called Nongawa which is located approximately. 50km (air distance) south of WEWAK in the north of Papua Neuguinea.
Nongawa is a village with approximately. 50 - 100 locals and they are living there in nice little original timber houses, shadows in the same kind of way since I don't know.
The locals are very friendly and nothing to do with some PNG (Papua NeuGuinea) sometime cannibals. How the buffs have been getting there.
The buffs have been brought in to PNG a long time ago (approximately. 30 - 40 years) and as well they jumped in through Indonesia.
At the beginning it was farmland of some locals which broke up with farming very soon (maybe 30 years ago), since then all the buffs have been growing up wild in the bush (area).
There is such a big amount of food, jungle, open plant where nobody is in there and that's the reason why they have been growing up to a no. of approximately 80,000 up to day. Population is very close to 30%.
Especially this area where Bruce has the license for hunting is approximately. 120km² big since he started to discover. But still PNG and the area for buffs is much bigger but for the short time he started there he was not able to go further up to now. Three kinds of hunts: - the open plant hunts are like open fields covered with up to 4 feet high grass. The grass is high enough for cover. If the wind is perfect you can get very close. But still shots from 40 up to 200m are possible in the open plant. The area is looking similar like a small hilly terrain everywhere little river (width approximately. 2-3m) the jungle is growing on both sides of the river.
- Jungle hunt will be close in work real nice thick original jungle: shots will be done up to 40m.
- Night hunt: open plant and jungle with torches (strong light) but still close in work but more than jungle in the open plant depends on the torches. Each day the hunters have the possibility for all three kinds of hunts.
Early in the morning you start with a nice breakfast from the locals.
After getting daylight you start with open plant because the buffs are grazing in the cool open plant (but still warm for them it's cool) that's the first possibility.
During the day you go to the jungle because many buffs but still not all go the jungle for resting instead of staying in the sun. It's real nice temp. to hunt in the jungle during day, second possibility.
In the afternoon you go out to the open plant and stay there up to night (how long is up to the hunters and the guy) third possibility.
Then you go back to the camp.
But still on each of those 3 possibilities the hunters are able to get 1-3 buffs for each possibility.
All the hunts will be carried out with excellent local guys who know the area like there "back of the hand" and they search the buffs earlier than the best "blood dog". In the buff area you are able to hunt wild boar as well.
From the camp to a bit further area a vehicle will bring the hunters out there. If you are close enough you start hunt them like walking behind and try to catch them (don't know the special word think it's stalking).
Safety is all the time the most important part and all of them are looking after. The guns are included but still possible to get the owns one with. The other animals are called rusa deer and crocs but they are not in the buff area. But there is a good, spot plenty of them are there and good hunting too. The area is between WEWAK and Nongawa.
I think the hunting area as it is prepared gives the hunters the real hunting kick, because it's not a five star hotel like heaps of African lodges, here you are integrated in the village and they give you all their respect as well all you need for hunting. The hunters have to stalk behind the buffs and do not wait for them at one of the locations like they do in Europe and that's a big different what I appreciate. Still with the vehicle which is carrying the hunters around the hunters will walk to get the buffs (approximately. 5km per day depends on the hunter if he tries to use all possibilities).
I like adventure, hunting and I can't find any point which will not fit into what I got or which I would not like. The hunt is wrong for Misses which have never been on an adventure trip. The guys must consider a 5km walk a day which is nothing. They have to like the original style of the locals. They must consider that they do not get a white five star hotel. I took 3 other guys with 2 of them have never been in the jungle and the loved it all of them try to go there again.
