Problems of Hunt:
Highlights of Hunt: My wife and I hunted with TGB in April 2012. Alejandro Trigo, the owner/operator of the outfit, was a fantastic and attentive host. His lodge is luxurious and comfortable. To this day, my wife and I rave about the food and service rendered by his kitchen staff. We both have considerable travel hunting experience; I usually go on 2 travel hunts/per year for the last twenty years. My wife took a red stag, a buffalo, a boar, a fallow buck, a blackbuck, and a huge double curl feral sheep. I took a stag and a feral goat. The conduct of the hunt is spot and stalk on generally flat country. The longest shot was 150 yards. Although the shots are not long, the hunt sometimes demands some quick shots on moving animals. The highlight of the hunt was spot and stalk of a huge water buffalo in reasonably thick woods similar to scrub oak. It was a challenge to evade cows and smaller bulls in pursuit of what proved to be a monster. The overall hunting and non-hunting experience was excellent from the minute we arrived in camp to the minute we left camp. It was my wife's favorite hunting experience. I think it only fair that I give the reader some caveats. Depending on what species you are hunting, the hunt may be conducted in a high fenced area. Some hunters find this objectionable. The stag can be hunted in both, but the non-fenced stags are at a different and what I am told is a less luxurious lodge. The trophy quality is supposedly less in the non fenced area and the hunting is much more difficult. Also, the guides knowledge of English ranges from very limited to none. My Spanish is not bad, and I was able to communicate OK; however, there was a couple from Canada who spoke no Spanish and their guide spoke no English. It was clear that in spite of this language barrier, they had a fantastic time. I should mention that my guide, Juan, did everything possible to assure we had a fantastic time. It is important to realize that hunting in Argentina is similar to hunting in Africa. You pay a day fee, and a trophy fee is levied for each animal you take. Even when a "credit" is negotiated prior to the hunt via a "package," it is usually for a relatively modest trophy and additional trophy fees often apply. Further, it may not be possible for you or your guide to "score" the trophy until it is on the ground. We had two clearly negative experiences related to the trip. First, traveling with firearms to Argentina is troublesome because of their inefficient bureaucracy at the airport. It took several hours to complete the paperwork at the airport, and we missed our connecting flight at Newberry Municipal Airport. Fortunately, Alejandro had arranged to have an extremely helpful driver to meet us at the airport, and he was a lifesaver. I was able to arrange prompt and easy ground transportation to the camp with them. The 7 hour drive cost about $600. After leaving camp and flying to BA, we missed our flight back home because of some of the worst traffic I have ever experienced (note that I have lived in NYC my whole life!) and because of the same inefficient bureaucracy involving the guns at the airport. We incurred extra expense of a drive to the city and a hotel room there. Because of confusion and lack of communication between the airline and the government agents, I was forced to leave my ammo in Argentina. If I had to do it over, I would leave my guns at home and borrow Alejandro's excellent quality guns in camp. Also, I would fly a day or two early into BA and enjoy the city and then travel to camp; Alejandro can give you a referral to a limo-bus that can transport you comfortably between BA and camp. The other negative experience involved trophy shipment; again, another inefficient bureaucracy. It took about 15 months for my trophies to be cleared by the Argentinian government. Although this was more distressing to my taxidermist than to me, I was legitimately concerned for a while that I might never get my horns back to the states. However, all's well that ends well, and my taxidermist is a happy and prosperous man. Hopefully, Alejandro has gained some experience in circumventing this hurdle. I believe he was frustrated as I. I should mention that we were shipped the wrong boar skin, we were missing one stag cape, and we had some slippage of one of the stag capes. I believe that if you book with Alejandro, you and your group will have a trip of a lifetime.
