The elephant were getting hammered by poachers; the Tanzanian government's last minute decision to not allow hunting of Harvey Red Duiker; and the relatively small concession size. I also wounded and lost a hippo. |

Enjoying a new area for me. Working with a great PH. Experiencing elephant hunting for the first time. Very good hunting for buff, kudu, and sable. I have never seen bushpig during the day like here. |

This is a qualified statement. As an elephant hunt, this was a flop. The elephant are poached out, and I doubt there will be many around for years. Admittedly, this is a migration corridor, but we were there at the right time of the year, and we saw copious evidence of elephant poaching. However, if you are not doing a general bag/Elephant hunt, but rather buffalo or plains game, it would be a very nice choice. |

I took this hunt as an exploratory hunt for Adam Clements. We knew there were some issues, but not to the level we found with the elephant. I don't think anyone did anything wrong, or that there was a "problem" per se, just poaching. The concession is on the small side for lion -- we could drive the entire concession in one day and there was just one resident pride. The pride male was a 3-4 year old male (with no recorded lion being shot here in several years, so I think that speaks to poaching as well) and he was just not an acceptable cat to shoot, either legally or ethically. The leopard were all over the place, and we were sure we would get one at first. They were there, but not hitting baits, even if they walked under them. Either this was from poaching/locals poisoning the cats or just too much young stuff around, I can't say for sure. This concession had reports of large elephant being taken just a few years ago, so I assume it has really gone downhill recently. There were all kinds of abandoned baby elephant all over the place, and we saw only 2 bulls and they were immature and not legal. The poached skulls were all of adolescent elephant that we saw- no big ones. The only elephant they took this year by the trophy registry was a barely legal bull. The buffalo were plentiful and, if not up to Masailand, were as good as pretty much anywhere else I have been. This was probably as good a spot as you will find for greater kudu in Tanzania -- there were several kudu in the same size range as the one I shot. We saw Sable every time we looked for them. Some decent bushbuck, but I shot a smaller one. Impala are not very big here. While tossed in with the East African by the scoring groups, they are more southern Impala by size, and smallish at that. Basically, a good area for buffalo/plains game, but not a good elephant spot at this point. The local oddity of the Harvey Red Duiker were very numerous, and a shame that the government did what they did with them.
