I schedule a cougar hunt in Utah for January 9th-14th. I arrived on the 6th of January and made contact with my guide who advised me that his truck broke down and he was purchasing a new one the following day. My guide (Garret Smith) hooked me up with a second guide (Kim Payne) and we started the hunt two days early with no additional charge. We had another houndsman out with us looking for tracks.
My original guide Garret arrived on the 8th with a new truck full of dogs ready to chase some cats and a second houndsman Preston. We hunted along and hard the 8th and 9th turning the dog loose late on the 9th in a flat area on a nice set of tracks. After a couple hours with no luck we had to pull the dogs due to light conditions.
The following morning we were heading back to the same area and Garret wanted to check one canyon first in the morning before heading back on the cat the day before. By 8am we cut a track of a huge tom. Garret turned 16 dogs loose at 8:30 abd by 8:50 the cat was treed.
From the point the dogs were turned loose to the tree was about 700 yards which took us about 2 hours due to conditions. Reaching the tree it was nice to see all dogs at the bottom with my tom laying uptop with no worries. After collecting the dogs and securing them, we were able to take some photos before getting to business.
The hunt was truly a life experience and a retirement present to myself. My guide was professional and never stopped working for me. I would use this outfitter and guide again at anytime, they went above what was expected.
