Picked up from Port Elizabeth airport by Victor. 1 1/2 hours drive to his bush camp. Salubrious! Went to try out his .243 and .270. Waste of time bringing your own rifles. Victor's old guns are sweet shooting. On the way back to camp saw 2 old Black wildebeest bulls. Stalked them and collected one. Good start! Nest morning went out after Klipspringer near camp. You can see them from camp on top of the mountains.Walked a short way and spotted a nice mature male looking down at us and took him. After lunch drove around the mountains to Victor's sheep farm near Wolwefontein. Stopped by the Police station to open Victor's front gate and I saw a Steenbuck watching us. He ran and then stopped so we walked a few yards and I shot him near the tennis club. More of a drive-by shooting than a hunt but he was a 5 1/4" male and could hunt a long time to find a longer one. There was still plenty of daylight so we popped out to look for Mountain Reedbuck. Drove up a new track that Victor has just bulldozed to open up a new area. Stopped at the end and walked a few yards before we saw Mountain Reedbuck running on the opposite side of a ravine. The male stopped behind a bush so I shot through it and dropped him. Mitchell, the tracker, and Victor went to collect him and I couldn't understand what they were so excited about. When I realised that the ram's horns were half as long again as the nice one hanging in the lodge I understood that we had an exceptional trophy. Official measurement may not be as optimistic as my measurement but he is still an outstanding trophy. After 24 hours in camp I already had half my list. The next day was spent trying for a nice Common Duiker. They were common enough but they all duiked. We then spent a few days in the mountains beyond Graaf Reinet trying for Vaal Rhebuck. We saw several family groups but they were extremely skittish, running at first sight of a vehicle half a mile away. I didn't have Blue Wildebeest on my list but we found a very old bull alone on top of a plateau and decided to stalk him for the fun of it. We bumped him out of a hollow and he ran off perhaps 2km so we called the truck to collect us and walked back towards the track. I looked back and saw the Wildebeest was running back towards us, straight towards 3 men standing in front of a truck. I kept waiting for him to stop or turn but when he got within 30 yards without slowing I shot him in the chest. Territorial, mad or suicidal? I don't know but at that range I wasn't giving him the benefit of the doubt. A very old Waterbuck with worn down horns was watching this performance from the top of a 7000 ft mountain where no Waterbuck should live so we stalked him and shot him lying down from behind some rocks at about 20 yards range. A couple of days later we got up at 4am and drove towards the coast where we met up with a vermin controller who had two hound packs running. We thought the day was going to be a blank when the hounds started baying and treed a Caracal. We descended a steep valley the climbed through dense scrub to reach them. After trying twice to fire our host's new semi-auto 12g we found it had a broken firing pin. Fortunately the dog man had a ancient gun made in Russia which I borrowed and that went bang so we had a nice male Caracal, not huge but big enough! The next day was another fruitless hunt for Duiker. I wasn't too worried, because I got one a few months ago in Cameroon but they are a sporting quarry. We the tried another sheep farm in the mountains for Vaal Rhebuck and this time we were able to stalk to 300 yards. It was an awkward shot uphill with the .243 but it was a clean kill at 314 yards which was pleasing. Hunting back on Victor's sheep farm a few Black Springbuck had got out in to the mountains so I took one of those too. Nice old ram. Altogether a most satisfactory hunt!
