Condition Comments: |
Buffalo were incredibly abundant with numerous hard boss bulls. Bushbuck were abundant but as always difficult to get a shot at in cover. Reedbuck very common but expect to sort though lots of OK rams to find a really big one. Saw multiple herds of sable every day. Waterbuck less common than other game but I killed a 28" bull. Young warthogs and sows everywhere. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
Getting to Quelimanae, Mozambique requires 2 flights from Johannesburg and they don't fly more than 2x/day in some cases. Once in Quelimanae expect a 6 hour drive into the Mahimba Reserve camp, the last 2 hours on dirt roads. It's remote. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
I saw at least 600 buffalo in the 4 days I was looking for them (I killed my 40" bull on the second day but went with my camp mate on day 3 and on day 4 we were asked to take a cow by the local officials for a local village. A PH took the cow while I video taped the hunt. Seeing that number of sable was very unexpected and the waterbuck was a terrific bonus I hadn't planned on. The food was outstanding considering how remote the camp was. The PHs were absolute professionals but very congenial all the time. We were well into the dry season so almost not mosquitoes. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
The standard - a good heavy rifle and possibly a medium caliber for antelope, good binoculars and boots. Plan to sweat a bit. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
yes |
| Why? |
This is my 3 hunt with JP Kleinhans Safaris and with Mel Kleinhans as my PH and I have never had a bad experience. They absolutely know their business and take pride in a quality camp and abundant game. They are very scrupulous about directing you to mature and older animals. You won't experience any ground shrinkage. |

ADDITIONAL
HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
This was truely a quality hunt with great people. The buffalo were there in terrific abundance. Other game, especially Roosevelt sable were very common. The PHs were extremely professional and insured you took only a quality mature animal that was a solid representative of the species. They stopped one buffalo charge cold at 20 yards. JP Kleinhans maintains a camp staff of 35 locals that cook, clean wash clothes and skin and preserve trophies. The staff were very friendly and dilligent although try to learn a few words of Portugese before you go if you want to talk a lot to them. I got by mostly on gestures and a little spanish plus the few words I learned while there. JP also maintains 4 anti-poaching teams around the perimeter of the reserve to insure that game remains abundant. All the meat except the little we ate each day went to the staff and their families and the local villagers. Food and sleeping accomodations more than I would have expected - very good.
