New Hunts In Vietnam Appear Ready To Go

Published: June - 2002

I promised to send you an update on my check-out trip to Vietnam. Well, here it is. The first leg of the trip started with 13 hours of flying, not including the time change. First stop was Ho Chi Minh City, which of course used to be known as Saigon. After clearing customs and passport control, I was met by my partner, Aviva, outside the reception hall. From the airport, it was a short ride to the city center and the Rex Hotel. The hotel was by Western standards at least three stars and full of tourists. After a very nice dinner, it was time for a rest, as we were slated to go on to Dalat City the next morning.

Dalat is where we met the outfitter for these hunts. We had to leave some things in his office, he said, as we couldn't possibly take more then 20 kilos of gear with us to the camp. I was to find out just why later on.

The next morning we headed toward Lam Dong province where the hunting camp is located. It took about seven hours for us to reach the end of the road. By that I mean the road became so rough the jeep simply could not go any further. At that point, we were told the camp was still about 10 kilometers away. Looking around, it didn't take long to figure out that the camp was somewhere in the vast jungle that yawned away in front of us.

At that point, three motor scooters showed up, seemingly from nowhere. Good news! Seems we were going to be able to scooter in for the next five kilometers. The bad news was, we would have to walk the remaining five kilometers. As we plunged into the jungle, I couldn't help but laugh. After traveling so far on modern airplanes, here I was scootering through the jungle and facing the prospect of covering five kilometers on foot. What the hell was a 10-kilometer trip, especially, if I could ride for the first five.........(continued)
