Lukwika is controlled nowadays by Miombo Safaris. We spoke with owner Michel Mantheakis at press time, who said his clients this past year took a 75-pounder and a 64 x 58-pounder. He said the chances are quite good that he will better that by a wide margin in 2002. Matheakis did not want to create unrealistic expectations, but he did say he has seen some of the "most remarkable" jumbos he has ever seen in Lukwika. Moreover, they tend to be quite docile.
One of Mantheakis' Professional Hunters, incidentally, has been suffering greatly this past year due to mistaken identity. Seems his name is Alex Walker, which also happens to be the name of a safari operator in Zambia who is said to owe money to numerous hunting clients and who has been charged with various irregularities in the operation of his safari company. For the record, PH Alex Walker of Miombo Safaris in Tanzania is a different person than the one in Zambia we have written about repeatedly of late. We regret any problems this confusion of names might have caused.
