I booked my hunt with Schaafsma several years ago because I was after a magnum buck for a book I am writing on deer hunting. His waiting list was long, but I wanted to hunt with Arrow Five Outfitters because of the quality of bucks I knew Schaafsma has on his ranch. I made the right choice, as I killed a giant 5 x 7 non-typical scoring 147-7/8 points with three main beams and double eye guards on both main beams! A non-typical blacktail is so rare that B & C doesn't even have a category for it in their record book; but in the SCI book, it should rank as the new number eight after the 60-day waiting period. Another hunter who hunted that first week tagged a typical 4 x 4 scoring 140-5/8 points. And, we both took our bucks on the first morning of hunting!
I was in camp several days before the next hunter was scheduled to arrive, so my early kill allowed me plenty of time to scout and check out the ranch. What I found only confirmed my belief that this ranch is one of the best in North America for trophy blacktail deer. On our best day, Schaafsma and I saw 44 branch-antlered bucks.
