I've just learned that several hunters recently took outstanding desert bighorn rams South of the Border. Two of them, killed on Tiburon Island by Hunting Report subscribers Sherwin Scott and Dick Jacobs, won the Gold and Silver awards at the recent FNAWS convention. Another giant ram was killed on the mainland in Sonora by subscriber Mirrel Kephart in late January, too late for this year's competition. Kephart booked his hunt through The Trophy Connection who was also instrumental in arranging the Tiburon hunt for Jacobs. Evan Flores conducted the hunt on his famous ranch, Rancho Cirios. Flores has implemented intense sheep management on his ranches for the last several years, and it's obviously paying off.
Kephart's ram scored 185-6/8 B & C points green and 186 points SCI. This is the biggest ram ever killed on the mainland in Sonora, easily surpassing the previous record. It's a huge ram, with massive 17-1/8 inch bases. Kephart told me that his ram was running with another ram estimated to score over 180 points. Furthermore, he says he saw several other 170-plus rams during his hunt. Our congratulations go out to Kephart for killing what will surely be a contender for top honors in this year's FNAWS competition.
