I'm telling you all of this to illustrate how a proven outfitter makes good on an otherwise disastrous experience. Schaafsma promptly offered his clients another hunt on one of his other ranches in Sonora. Three hunters have already taken their hunts and eight others are scheduled for this season. The fact that six of the affected clients have already booked other hunts with Schaafsma speaks volumes about the way he handled the matter.
While I had him on the line, I asked Schaafsma how his other Mexican hunts went. He reported much better results. Out of the 16 hunters he hosted on his other ranches, only two returned home unsuccessful, and they have rebooked. The best two Coues bucks taken had green scores exceeding 110 points, which will qualify them for B & C if they hold up after the drying period. Schaafsma conducts these hunts on a 1 x 2 guided basis, which means the client hunts with an American guide and a Mexican guide. Hunts run five days at a cost of $4,000; or $3,500 for 2 x 2. This hunt is for one deer, but if a client wants to take a second buck, it can be arranged as a seven-day hunt for $6,500.
