As regards when to go, Fort Drum lies in New York Game Management Area 6H, where hunting gets underway with archery season, which runs from September 27 to October 23 this year. There is a one-week muzzleloader season for antlerless deer only from October 17 to 23 in Area 6H. Regular season for Area 6H runs from October 24 through December 6. During this season, hunters may use rifles, shotguns, handguns, muzzleloaders and bows. Finally, Area 6H also has an either-sex muzzleloader season from December 7 through 13. The total bag limit on base is two deer, one of which may be taken during archery season, the other during rifle season.
Bear hunting gets underway with an any-weapon "early" season, which runs from September 19 through October 16 this year. Archery season for bear runs from September 27 to October 23, muzzleloader season runs from October 17 to 23, and regular season runs from October 24 to December 6.
To hunt during any of these periods, hunters must purchase a $10 annual Fort Drum hunting permit, which is good from October 1 to September 30 of the following year.
