The situation in Zambia as this issue goes to press is a bit dicey. Seems former president Kenneth Kaunda and an important figure in his UNIP party, Robert Chongwe, were both wounded in what appeared to be a government-led assassination attempt. Some of the news reports we picked up on the Internet contained the word "war" in them. The US State Department has condemned the violence and called on all sides to "...exercise restraint and to refrain from inflammatory rhetoric and violence." There is very little chance Zambia is really going to go off the rails at this point. Calls we made at press time indicated there was a lot of tension in the air, but little outward sign of unrest. Still, if I were headed to Zambia on safari this month, I'd call my PH or safari operator to see what is going on in the streets of Lusaka.
