Agent Bert Klineburger, who books hunts for Colonel Negussie Eshete of Rocky Valley Safaris, says he sent two clients to the Kaka Mountains this past spring. Only one took a nyala, while the other left eight days early. Klineburger says this client was not interested in resuming the physically difficult mountain nyala hunt after taking plains game at Danakil. Klineburger recommends hunting for either nyala or plains game, but not both, because of the time involved in a successful nyala hunt. Negussie charges $800 per day for a 1 x 1 hunt; $700 per day for a 2 x 1 safari.... Agent Beth Jones of Trophy Hunters Safaris says her nyala contact, Tom Mattanovich, did not hunt nyala this past year but he has been in the mountains and has seen a number of bulls. He has three clients booked for next year. He charges $1,000 per day with a 21-day minimum.
The other outfitter in this country is Dimitris Assimacopoulos of Libah Safaris, who hunts in the Arba Gugu Mountains. He is represented in the US by agent Constantin Constantinou. Unfortunately, Constantinou was ill and unavailable for an update on this past season as this issue went to press in early December.
