Wyomings Landowner Program

We continue to believe the "Landowner List" program in Wyoming is a hunting gold mine for the hunter who's willing to do a bit of prospecting on his own, as witness the new opportunities below that correspondent Bob Gooch just uncovered. This is the third report we have had on this list and all three are must reading by the budget hunter looking for new horizons. The other two reports appeared in the April 1998 issue (see pages 1-5) and the May 1998 issue (see pages 9-10). The "Landowner List" program is basically a directory of ranchers in the Sheridan and Cheyenne regions who are willing to open their land to hunters for a modest fee. The directory was put together by game wardens who perceived the need for such a list and set about the task of creating it, ranch by ranch. As we have told you before, you can get a copy of the Sheridan and Cheyenne list by calling the Wyoming Fish and Game Department. Just be advised that the lists are not perfect by any means. Some ranchers on the list have lost their properties and others no longer offer hunts. Some listed phone numbers simply don't work. Buried in the trash, however, are some real gems, as witness the 12 hunts we dug up for the April issue, the three additional ones we dug up last month and the six that follow:

Mark Thompson: Deer hunts only in Hunt Areas B, 11 and 12. Located in eastern part of Wyoming near where Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming meet. Has 8,000 acres in piney and rolling hill country with bottomland along a creek. Charges $600 for a week hunt and that includes lodging in his basement, a 10 a.m. breakfast and dinner. He assumes hunters like to get out before dawn and come in for a late breakfast. Limits hunters to 10 in all. He assigns hunters on opening day, but after that they have the run of the ranch. He doesn't guide, but he does show hunters about the ranch and suggests good hunting areas. Recommends hunters have their........(continued)
