Prather Ranch (c/o Steven Kerns): Manages 6,521 acres in Siskiyou County primarily for blacktail deer, but also for mule deer and antelope. High desert country surrounded by mountains. Department of Fish and Game Region 1, Deer zone C-1. Obtained 10 buck deer tags, good for either blacktail or mule deer, and one antelope tag in 1998. Tags cost $800 each, entitling purchaser to hunt ranch any length of time during two-month season. Hunters run their own hunts, but owner Steven Kerns shows them about the ranch and points them toward good hunting areas. Hunters are housed in an RV on the ranch with full electric and water hookups. Hunters prepare their own meals and furnish their own field transportation. Work Ranch (c/o Bert Claassen): Manages 12,000 acres in Monterey County for coastal blacktail deer. Elevations range from 1,500 to 2,300 feet. Oaks and pine are the predominant forest cover, but much of the land is open range. Located in Department of Fish and Game Region 3, Deer zone A. Usually obtains 10 buck tags and 10 doe tags, all of which are for sale. Fees are $1,200 for bucks and $600 for does. Hunts are for weekends only. Hunters check in late Friday and leave on Sunday.
