Landowner-Sponsored Hunts In Nevada

Finding an affordable, quality big game hunt on private land is something many hunters would like to be able to do. The problem is that non-residents who don't have personal contacts where they want to hunt usually find it difficult to come up with an opportunity that suits their needs. Here at U.S. Hunting Report, we want to help our subscribers make the contacts they otherwise could not. In doing some digging, we have found that some state wildlife departments are working hard to involve landowners in the process of creating hunting opportunities.
For example, the Nevada Game and Fish Department recently sent us a copy of their "Landowner Damage Compensation" tag list for 1997. These tags are issued to private landowners who have so many antelope and/or mule deer on their property that the Department has authorized them to kill animals by issuing a specified number of permits, ranging from one to 12, depending on the property. To verify the value of the list, we contacted one of the landowners at random, a fellow named John Mathews, and talked briefly with his wife. She told us that Mathews sold all of his tags this past February to individual hunters for $2,500 each. She says he plans to participate in the damage compensation program again next year, and welcomes inquiries from U.S. Hunting Report subscribers by mail at the address listed below. In all, the state issued a total of 91 "Landowner Damage Compensation" deer tags and 10 such antelope tags this year. Time constraints prevented us from determining if all of these tags have already been sold.
