Franks' safari is important to the US hunting community, because Franks booked this hunt fully aware that the US does not currently allow the import of sport-taken ivory from Mozambique. His request to import the ivory will be shepherded through US Fish & Wildlife by John J. Jackson, III, of Conservation Force, who hopes the process will result in the opening of this country to US elephant hunters. Franks and Jackson both deserve credit for undertaking this effort. We will keep you up to date on developments.
In the meantime, Hougaard says his second elephant client is set to arrive soon. He is confident there are moderate to large elephants in his area. In fact, he says a client in camp the same time Franks was there saw an 80-pounder. There is an outside chance of taking an even larger jumbo, Hougaard says. He promised to let us know what happens.
