While many of the old-time operations (Alcampo, Solimar, Big Game Outfitters, Ric Martin Trophy Adventures and others) have survived and prospered here, a number of other outstanding outfitters, including Arrow Five Outfitters and Pusch Ridge, have initiated hunts in this region. The most recent outstanding addition is Bucks & Bulls Guides and Outfitters, owned by Kim Bonnett and his partner, Jeff Warren. The two have developed a solid reputation as first-class outfitters in the US for mule deer, elk and antelope. They have produced many top-ranking trophies for their clients, primarily because of their ability to lock up superb leases and very qualified guides.
Last season, Warren agreed to guide for one of the best outfitters in Sonora in order to "learn the ropes." That outfitter was then instrumental in developing the Mexican contacts that led to Bucks & Bulls leasing a 35,000-acre ranch this season. This ranch is located in one of the top-producing trophy Coues deer areas in Sonora. It was hunted previously by a very successful outfitter who decided several years ago to concentrate his outfitting elsewhere.
Warren told me that they are going to set their minimum trophy goal at 100 B & C points - a lofty target. When I questioned this, he told me that their scouting trips and research show that the ranch has this potential. Significantly, they plan to provide each hunter with an American guide, in addition to a qualified Mexican guide.
The arrival point for a hunt here is Hermosillo, where hunters will be met by a Bucks & Bulls associate with all the paperwork to ensure a smooth entry. Then they will be driven directly to the ranch where they will stay in a comfortable hacienda complete with hot showers.
