"As they walked down the road, past some thick brush, they heard a bellow and the crashing of branches as an elephant that they could not see came charging toward them. Arthur Taylor quickly fired a shot into the air to stop the elephant's advance, which is all he could do as he couldn't see the animal at all. He directed Gerry to move away from the brush, toward some broken open ground where they would be better situated to protect themselves. Arthur followed Gerry, reloading as he went, until he heard the elephant emerge from the bush behind him. At that point he turned to fire and, on doing so, caught his foot in a hippo print and fell over backwards. The elephant ran right past him and continued after Gerry, who was some 10 to 15 yards away in the open. It hit Gerry and fell on him with its front knees. Arthur was up by then and fired at the elephant, which ran off into the brush. By the time Arthur reached Gerry, he was dead. The whole thing took place in seconds...."
All indications are, the incident was simply a tragic and unavoidable accident. For certain, it has left Wrobel's family and fiancee devastated. The same is true of PH Arthur Taylor who has an impeccable record. Two subscribers who know Taylor called this month to vouch for his ability and steadfastness. One of them, Jeff Bristol, was on safari with Wrobel when the accident occurred and was close enough to hear the gunshots.
