His first hunts of the year are seven-day archery and rifle elk hunts in August and September in the remote Selway Bitterroot Wilderness area, which lies in Units 12 and 17. Over the past 10 years, the shooting opportunity at elk in this area has consistently been 50 percent or higher. Several bulls in the 330 to 340 B & C point range have been taken. In an average year, clients can expect to see a branch-antlered bull in the 300-point class. Last year was abnormally warm, which made for very difficult hunting conditions. On the bright side, the carry-over into next hunting season should be higher than normal.
Craig has several camps in this area. Depending on location, clients are taken to base camp by horseback or a combination of horseback and charter flight. Hunting is from horseback and on foot, and all hunts are conducted on a 2 x 1 basis. Base camp consists of comfortable canvas wall tents complete with home-style cooked meals. Archery hunts begin August 30 and end September 24. The cost of a seven-day, fully guided hunt is $2,950. The September rifle bugle hunts take place between the 14th and 28th.
