From long experience, let me recommend that you incorporate walking down the stairs of a high-rise building into your training program. Goats do require climbing, but it is the quads, which come into play coming down a mountain, that are always the first muscles to go on a 10-day goat hunt. If the first descent does you in, you won't be able to make more than one climb and that can mean coming home empty-handed. A word to the wise should be sufficient. Also, on the matter of trophy quality, two observations come to mind. First, the best capes are found late in the season, which is why I recommend hunting after September 15th. Second, age is the key when it comes to high-scoring goats. The very biggest goats measure only 10 inches, maybe a bit more. Even a two-year-old goat can measure eight inches. What sends the numbers spiraling upward is base size, and only old goats have big bases. It takes experience to field-judge a trophy goat:
