But that's enough dwelling on bad news. The good news is what McAfee had to say about the hunting in his old stomping ground, Montana's Yak Valley and surrounding country. It was unclear at press time who would be buying McAfee's right to guide hunts here but he promised to keep us posted. He also said he would be happy to talk directly to Hunting Report subscribers who call him at the above number. Suffice it to say, McAfee is happy with what's happening in his area. He says whitetails are having a fantastic year here after the second mild winter in a row. The herd continues to expand rapidly, and he expects hunters will take very good bucks this fall. Anyone following my columns on this outfit knows that McAfee's hunters have accounted for a number of trophy whitetails.
Regarding other game in this area, McAfee says bears also are doing well here. His son saw 20 bears last fall alone. Those of you who took my advice and purchased a Montana bear tag by April 14 should find great hunting this spring. McAfee says the bears are coming out of hibernation early this year, with several seen in mid-April, which is almost unheard of in this area. Bears........(continued)
