Back in June (see Article 3478) we reported that Rann had signed for Chikwa/Fulaza, forming a new company, Ivory Safaris, to operate there. Before the 2011 closure, this area was hunted by Wildcat Safaris and by Peter Swanepoel, Jr. of SafariBwana. The Chikwa/Fulaza concessions run along the northern edge of North Luangwa National Park and straddle the Luangwa River in the northern Luangwa Valley. Here is Yearwood's report:
"In the beginning of the year I visited Jeff Rann at the SCI show, as I was looking forward to hunting Rann Safaris' Tanzania concessions in 2016. Rann indicated there was a possibility of leopard opening this year in Zambia, and I got a call from him in March about his new company, Ivory Safaris. I had hunted Botswana with Rann in 2011 and taken two spectacular elephant, and I decided to go for this opportunity.
"Upon arrival we discussed objectives, and settled on hippo as the first target. At sunrise on the first day we spent several enjoyable hours on the Luangwa watching the bulls guard their territory, and I ended up with a fine hippo and some meat for leopard bait.
"While baiting leopard on the second day we glassed several Cookson wildebeest, which are found only along the Luangwa River Valley. Jeff's spot-and-stalk techniques were fast-paced and effective, and we kept up with the herd bull while moving throughout the herd. This resulted in a beautiful heavy-horned bull with a long black beard. That afternoon we found a leopard had hit the bait that morning, but it never returned before dark.
"On day three we were up early and in the blind well before daylight. We heard the leopard several times. In the afternoon we........(continued)
