That noted, praise must be given to the service Peter Klaui gives his hunters regardless of success. The boat he uses, MV Estero, is superb as a floating base camp. The facilities were clean and comfortable. During my hunt, there were five hunters and four staff aboard, and I never felt cramped. The cook was more of a chef who doubled as a mechanic. He prepared for us absolutely phenomenal table fare each evening that consisted of freshly caught seafood and venison. Excellent wines rounded out the meals. One of the staff was also a taxidermist, so each trophy taken got superb field care.
I feel that some comments should be made about the amount of game seen. In all fairness, I did not see all that many trophy bucks. I would say that I averaged seeing one "shooter" per day and not many deer on the whole. My buck was probably the fifth or sixth best buck Klaui had ever had taken by one of his hunters. I did not see anything that came close to matching it while I was in camp. The other members of the group all took bucks I would have been happy with, however.
As for bear, the other animal some of us were seeking, nobody saw one. I think it was probably too late in the year. Plus, we were hunting an area that was best for deer, not for bear, although they have taken some very good bears out of this area and taken them late in the season. I have........(continued)
