Push To Open GambellaPublished: March - 2000 In Ethiopia, Nassos Rous-sos of Ethiopian Rift Valley Safaris (US contact, Richard Elliott) says he is going to "push hard" this coming year to open the last remaining closed area in Ethiopia - namely, Gambella. Animals available in this mixed jungle and savanna area should include Nile buffalo, Lelwel hartebeest, Lelwel tiang, white-eared kob, Sudan bohor reedbuck and Sudan roan. Roussos said he was going to visit Gambella this spring with an eye toward offering test safaris next year in December and January. It is not clear yet, he said, whether he and the other operators would push for the creation of individual concessions or "pool areas." Much will depend on the condition of the game and the quotas that could be safely created. He promised to keep us up to date.
