One ranch I'm familiar with is the 777 Ranch near Hondo, Texas, (www.777ranch.com, 830-426-3476), a five-hour drive from Dallas, but less than an hour from San Antonio's international airport. See Report 9207 on a mixed-bag exotics hunt there last April. In the interest of full disclosure, my son worked on the 777 several years ago, and the ranch is located just outside of Hondo, where I now live. African PH Jeff Rann owns the ranch and hunts here during our winter. The ranch offers a wide variety of exotics and some spectacular whitetail bucks.
Scimitar-horned oryx, addax and dama gazelle are available on the 777, but be aware that the anti-hunting groups who first challenged the ESA status of these species have now challenged the conservation hunting permits offered on all ranches. (See this month's issue of Conservation Force Bulletin delivered with your newsletter.) If you are interested in hunting one of these desert antelope, you may want to do so while they're still available. The 777 Ranch also has Arabian oryx, Eld deer and more common species, such as red stag and fallow deer. We called just before this issue went to press, and the ranch reported some openings both before and after the show, though one group had already booked a spot on their way to the DSC Convention.
The African Hunting Expo (www.africanhuntinginfo.com/en/expos) is held in Atlanta January 17-18, 2014 (along with other dates at other venues in Canada). The Georgia whitetail season runs through........(continued)
