Lee hunted in mid-May in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, about three hours north of Bucharest. He reports taking two good roe bucks, including one which should score a Gold Medal. "The deer were free-ranging, non-pressured, and not overhunted.
"Unforgettable Hunting is an association of local hunters who have a long-term concession on 30,000 hectares (74,000 acres) in the Carpathian Mountain foothills. They have quota on brown bear, red stag, wild boar, chamois and roe deer with associated seasons and regulations. All animals are totally wild. This is their third year of operation, and we were the first Americans and the first SCI members for their new American-Plan roe deer hunt.
"In addition to the American-Plan package they offer a variety of European-Plan packages. The three-hunter American-Plan package offers lodging, meals, in-country transportation, three days of hunting, and up to two male roe deer per hunter regardless of size (no add-on trophy fees or other hidden costs), all licenses/permits, trophy preparation (European mount) and shipping documentation, for ¬1,600 (about $2,100 at this writing). Extra males are available at European rates. The roe deer season opens May 15th.
"We flew into Bucharest (two-hour flight from Frankfurt) and enjoyed two days of sightseeing. The city is historic, clean, with very friendly people. On the third day we were picked up at the hotel by Horia Sandu, the main contact for Unforgettable Hunting and a director of the association.
