Allen reports, "I saw a number of bears and wound up taking one that squared just under eight feet," but he notes that success was only part of the story. "We saw numerous bears and some wolves. Wild boar sign was everywhere, although I did not see any boar, mainly because we were not looking for them. I actually saw a huge bear, but before I could get a reasonable shot, it was spooked by a pack of wolves. It was taken two weeks later by another hunter and ranked Number Five in the CIC record book.
"The weather in September is quite mild. These bears are nocturnal so a night vision scope or equipment would be a plus. If not, George will supply it. Be prepared to take a 75-yard shot in very poor light. Given the size of the one that got away,' I would not consider a rifle smaller than a 300 Win/Wby Mag with minimum 180 grain bullets; 220 grain would be better. (This is just my opinion.)"
Allen emailed us additional details on his hunt, saying "Romania could be considered a diamond in the rough.' I wound up there last September almost by default. I had wanted to go to Kamchatka and hunt the huge brown bears there (Alaska is just prohibitively expensive). However, I could not find anyone who wanted to go, and time was running out. While looking for a place to go grizzly or brown bear hunting I stumbled across Romania. Considering the cost of the hunt and the ease of getting there, I decided to take a chance.
