In report 9087, Rayna Wortham tells us she and her husband hunted for four days in mid-March: "My husband and I decided many years ago if we ever had the opportunity, we wanted to go to New Zealand. This was our dream trip, and it was initially to travel and play tourist. But my husband decided that he also wanted to hunt stag while we were there, so I did some checking and found Four Seasons Safaris and decided to book two stag hunts. [Editor's note: we now have 15 positive hunt reports on file on this outfitter, dating back to 2004.]
"Our guide, Jim Gibson, picked us up at the hotel in Christchurch, and we headed to Stravon, where we got on a Polaris Ranger and drove another 50 minutes to the cabin at the end of the property. WOW! The cabin was beautiful with French doors looking out upon a waterfall. What a view!
"That afternoon, we started looking for stag. Due to the fog, it was hard to see on the higher hills, but we went down toward the ranch and found some spectacular stags, larger, in fact, than what we were looking for. We consoled ourselves with a great dinner. Over the course of our hunt we saw a lot of red stag on the property, along with fallow deer, whitetail deer, chamois, wallabies and a lot of birds.
"The second day also brought fog and drizzle, but Jim located an exceptional 6x7 at the bottom of a ravine. I got my stag while Jim videotaped the hunt for me. The terrain was very steep and thick. Jim was very adept in caping him out for me and getting us out of the ravine and back to the Ranger. It was a calorie-burning hike, but Jim was always very positive and upbeat.
