Over in NG32 (Qorokwe), Boyd Meyer shot a jumbo weighing 80.3 x 79 pounds. He hunted with Johan Calitz. Days later, another client took a 71-pounder in NG41. And then, in NG34 (Sankuyo), client Glen Summers shot another bull that measured 18¾ at the lip and 44 and 42 inches in length. It should weigh 70 pounds. Summers was the first client to hunt Sankuyo this season.
According to Tharia Unwin of Calitz's administrative offices, the hunters had to work for their trophies, walking many hours for numerous days and looking over hundreds of elephant. "So far, all our clients have been successful, but the going is tough, and guys are working hard," she says. (See McGinnes's and Meyer's photos in our online Trophy Gallery.)
Despite all the down news about the government's planned closure of elephant hunting in 2014, Unwin says they received extra quota for this season, which they quickly managed to sell out. We've heard of other operators having limited permits available. If you have the chance to hunt Botswana elephant this season, don't pass up the opportunity if you can help it.
Still in Botswana, subscriber Robert King hunted with Clive Eaton's Tholo Safaris (www.tholosafaris.com) in CT3 this past April. He killed a 68 x 66 pound elephant with PH Riaan Taljaard. "I saw an average of 40 bulls a day, and that many cows, plus plains game," he reports. "All animals in CT3 were in prime condition but rain is needed badly."
