In Wyoming, subscriber Dave Baxter took a very good Shiras moose, hunting Ross Adney of Beaver Trap Outfitters (307-461-0655). Baxter hunted in the Bighorn Mountains in October, taking his moose after a fast uphill stalk in -2 degrees Fahrenheit. (See Report 8942.) He notes that wolves are not yet a problem in this area, though moose numbers are declining. He recommends the outfitter, saying, "Ross will get you a moose! Also consider an elk hunt. The Bighorns are starting to produce good elk in the 330-class."
We talked to Adney at press time, and he told us the problem in not openings but securing tags for moose or elk. "It took 14 preference points to draw a moose tag last season, and elk are a tough draw as well." Wyoming, he notes, does not offer as many Governor's Tags as some other Western states. He does guide lion hunts; tags are available over the counter, and he still has two opening for 2013/14.
