"After nearly three years of hard work I have finally gotten legal permission to conduct safaris in Liberia! I have a hunting area of just over 57,000 hectares (140,000 acres). It is a six-hour drive from Monrovia. We have managed to access a remote area; 12 log bridges had to be fixed over a 23-kilometer span, and then we had to hack an eight-kilometer road into an untouched area.
"It seems to be game-rich, with all of the Liberian rarities. My professional hunter, Dave Muller, recently found fresh Pygmy hippo tracks within a few hundred meters of camp. We will be hunting zebra duiker, water chevrotain, western bongo, Ogilby's duiker, black duiker, Maxwell's duiker, bay duiker, dwarf buffalo, giant forest hog, red river hog, civet, genet and golden cat. All of these animals are found in the area, and there is also a very good population of Jentink's duiker, which hopefully will thrive under our protection and may one day be exportable (they are now CITES I). Our area is an intact example of the West African (Upper Guinean) rainforest, and I am very excited that this hunting and conservation project can save this very unique diversity of animals.
