In the June issue, we featured a photo in our Trophy Gallery listing of subscriber Peter Stein's 77 x 72 pound elephant. The official weight has come in now at 78.19 x 73.24 pounds. Stein hunted this past April in the NG43 area of Botswana with Kgori Safaris (www.kgorisafaris.com), PH was Frans van der Merwe. You may recall that this area was severely burned last year, but Stein says there were plenty of elephant anyway. The fire also opened things up, having burned the heavier brush. He reports seeing 80 to 100 elephant in bunches of up to 20. He says they were also a bit aggressive and recounts how he and van der Merwe found themselves almost surrounded by jumbo when they tried to position themselves to ambush a bull heading back from a water hole. A cow charged them, forcing van der Merwe to shoot it only feet away from Stein and his wife. The other elephant began approaching them, but stopped at the dead cow. Stein says they wasted no time running for the safari vehicle. Three days later, he took his trophy bull. He plans to return again next year.
