I must pass on some sad news from Namibia. Safari operator and conservationist Jan Harm Oelofse has passed away. Oelofse, with his family, operated the Mount Etjo Safari Lodge and Okonjati Game Reserve. I did not have any details on his death as I wrote this, except that he died on October 15, 2011 and his family was closing the operation on a temporary basis to honor his memory. Oelofse started his career as a game catcher and revolutionized the methods for trapping and translocating large numbers of live game. He was the trainer for all the animals in the classic motion picture Hatari!, starring John Wayne. He later established Mount Etjo Lodge, where the Joint Commission of the United Nations met in April 1989 to restore peace and independence for the Republic of Namibia. You can read more about this extraordinary man on the Mount Etjo website at www.janoelofsesafaris.com.
