In addition to problems tracking and stalking game in the tall grass, Madero says he shot a female leopard due to the PH's error. Bernon disagrees and says Madero shot a "big, big female" without authorization from the PH. Madero claims the PH's eyesight is failing. Bernon maintains that Leroux has 30 years experience and knows cat hunting. The two accounts differ greatly.
After the incident with the leopard, Madero says his safari went from bad to worse. He says Leroux burst into his tent at 2:30 am and told him to pack quickly because there were some bandits on their way to the camp. Madero says they left camp with staff in one truck and he and the anti-poaching personnel in a second.
"All were armed and ready to shoot," he says. They traveled all night and part of the next morning to another camp. "This was the worst situation I have ever been through," Madero says. The PH's satellite phone was out of minutes, and they had to use Madero's phone to call Bangui and the other camps to inform them of what had happened.
